What haven't I twigged yet? I moved to Usenapp a couple of months ago. I'm
not using it much because I find the interface impossible! (I used to use
MT-Newswatcher.)

So for example today I find that uk.comp.sys.mac has 1,325 articles. All but
about 20 (I guess) are spam posts! Am I supposed to set 1,305 rules to avoid
these?

I *never* had this spam problem in MTNW ... although I readily admit that I
set rules decades ago that would eliminate most of them (e.g. 'kil if an
article has come from this domain").

I can't see anything in Usenapp that would assist me to gradually (or rather
better: at a stroke) kill all this dross.

I suppose I'm just a Dumb User, after all these years! :-)

John

Most of the spam I see comes via Google Groups so I have a rule that if
Message ID contains googlegroups, Perform the following action: Delete. You can
always create exceptions to this rule for those few genuine posters who use GG.
I can send you a screen shot of my rules if you wish.

I agree MT-NW was easier to use.

I take it you have some rules, yes? I mean, so you know how to create them?

Unlikely you can get rid of it at a stroke. You'll just have to add/modify
rules as a particular type of spam gets through. Remember: spam is in the eye
of the beholder, so you have to do it, really.

This sounds like the huge ongoing wave of googlespam. Several news
services e.g. Eternal September are collaborating to cancel this spam
from their own servers using NoCeM; I see hardly any of it.

This is the reason for Google's decision to close the Google Groups <->
Usenet gateway at the end of this month, the problem should then go away
(until the spammers find another open server to abuse).

Hello John

May I suggest you try a different newsserver?

I've been using this one and it works well:- https://individual.net/

Just 10 Euros per year - a small price to pay!

I assumed it was spammers having one last crack at flooding usenet
before GG stops allowing posting. I've seen 6/8 spam posts come through
most days over the last month or so (to compare, I never saw more than
one or two a week before, if that).

I see that like me you're on Eternal-September. Ray Banana, the E-S
admin and others are working very hard behind the scenes to keep their
servers clean using NoCeM so their users don't have to bother; it's a
big effort. The commercial services aren't bothering to sanitise their
feeds.

I use mainly E-S and Ray’s work has cut down the GG crap no end making my
filter almost redundant! Other providers have also taken counter measures.

Sadly I still need rules to combat certain trolls and excessive cross
posting :(

It can still be run on recent macOS versions via SheepShaver or other
Classic Mac emulators such as the prebuilt UTM offering. I occasionally run
MT-NW via SS on my M1 Mac just for fun :)

As a PlusNet user I have Usenet via their servers which allows through the
occasional spam post.
I also have the Eternal September server for Usenet which only very
occasionally [less than once a month] allows through Spam postings.

The easy way to avoid spam is to sign up to a better server.

Agree!! Ray does an excellent job of keeping Eternal September clean. He, and
other responsible server managers in collaboration, must spend HOURS keeping
their filters up to scratch.

My thanks to them.

I am also a Usenapp user, and I have a filter that marks GoogleGroups postings
red. Unusually, there was one this morning - but it was not spam, it was a
perfectly sensible posing from a real user.

And how he does if for free - that, I have no idea.

Old John.

What was the Message ID of that GG post, please, John?

No sign of it here.

+1 - I find it quite simple to do, although it is a little tedious starting
out.

OP here:

Yebbut: 1300? I'd have to look at Usenet every day to stand a chance of
keeping on top, and (a) I haven't really the time and (b) I keep forgetting!

As to Alan B's apology "Well, yes, but it thinks I'm running Mavericks!
Apologies to the OP for this
distraction :)" --- not at all! Digressions (most of them interesting, in
compsysmac) are the very stuff of Usenet :-D

John

PS I'm going to try the Googlegroups Rule (first suggested by the very Alan B
above!). I actually tried looking for the headers, but couldn't find the way,
in Usenapp -- I'll try again because now I know they can be found! :-D

This.

news.individual.net (aka the German server) zaps all of them.
