Recently got a new machine and I want to use an existing drive to back
it while still keeping the old TM archive. Up pops the notification
saying whether to "claim existing" or "start new", which I choose the
latter.

However, TM keeps wanting to try to backup to the existing archive,
which unsurprisingly fails. The new TM backup is fine and works as normal.

How do I get TM to ignore the old TM archive on the drive?

Two separate partitions should work. Use the Disk Utility.

That's what I've done. Yet the old TM partition still tries to run and
fails.

Never mind. I noticed I could remove the extra destination in the Time
machine settings. D'oh!
