Having worked with sound FX for many many years, I tend to recognise many
tracks when used in programmes I hear or see. It’s quite surprising how the
bells of Merton College move around the country in various scenes! I hired
equipment to Auntie back in the late 80’s when portable digital recording
equipment was just becoming affordable and more freely available. Aunty had
quite a few systems but they were all bolted down in studios with very few
truly portable battery powered systems available for engineers on location.
Auntie hired a Sony PCMF1 system from me along with a Binaural microphone
kit that I had assembled having made careful notes of the design when
working with a Beeb owned Binaural kit some time before. (I was recording a
series of historical dramas for broadcast and publication to schools and as
most of the recordings were being made on-location, I was using a Nagra
recorder and Binaural mic kit belonging to Auntie). If you ever hear any of
the baby sounds in plays etc. the chances are they are from recordings made
with my kit that the Beeb hired. There were many other tracks as well of
course but this was the very first fully digitally recorded and edited FX
CD that the Beeb produced and I was given a pre-release copy of it too.

Just thought you might be interested to know that, Michael Cane probably
doesn’t.

There's a famous scream that crops up in the film, TV (and I think
radio) worlds, known by name. Maybe baby sounds can become the McMillan
gurgle or whatever!

Thought I'd look up the scream - not easy, as there's a series of films
and the Munch painting. But I found it:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_scream
It's rather a fun read, if you're into films and the like.

The McMillan babynoises might not have such a wide reach (-:

I read somewhere that Hilda is played by Elgar from Ed Reardon’s Week, but
that can’t be right as Elgar has shuffled off his mortal coil.

We should get them to audition Harryet Pottercat, except that she's 16
and an old lady with arthritis, like me. She won the tontine of the 4
animals, 2 cats and 2 dogs, we brought from Spain.

She loved Bobby, the 3rd to go, and when he went transferred to B. She
sits on his lap a lot and is very picky about food. If she wants food,
door opened, needs the litter tray cleared as she's just used it or
just wants him to come downstairs so she can sit on him here she
screams non-stop. She is there in the dictionary under caterwauling.
It is not possible to ignore it. She comes and sits near and stares
and screams.

Might it be of interest to umra to note that as well as an episode of
Tenko, Ed Reardon also wrote "An Englishman Abroad" about the Bodyline
Cricket Tour and I thought it was really quite good. He wrote it under
his nom de plume, of course.

Oh, I'd assumed he'd been written out, having had a better offer from TA...

I presume in reality, all Ambridge cats are from BBC Cat Sounds XXV - or
have people really noticed a change? (Maybe now using XXVI?) Mike?

Goodness, no! Definitely two different cats! At least Elgar had more than
one way of miaow-speak!
