Simple question: I have a Mac Mini with both bays filled.
I want to swap out one of the disks.
(with pre-loaded material on it)

The question is: Can I find out without opening the Mini
which physical disk is in the upper/lower bay?
I would like to know in advance because swapping out the lower one,
aka the upper one when the thing is on its back,
is much easier than getting out the other one.

Disk Util does tell me that there are two disks,
but afaics it doesn't tell me where they are, physically,

Jan

Why do you want to do this?!!!

I'm sure it's also possible that you might be removing information needed by
Apple in order to 'start' your computer!

Surely it would be easier to transfer all the data on the disk to an external
disk or to the cloud?

Then simply erase the disks(s) in your Mac Mini and start over.

Hi Jan,

I've never used a Mac mini, but my Professor friend now has one!
He didn't at first believe that his accompanying screen, an Apple Studio
Display, is 27 inches as it's physically somewhat smaller than his previous
iMac!

Will you, please, explain the advantage(s) of "swapping minis and disks"?

It is a given that this must happen.
It is also a given that some disks
will need to go into another machine.

It is just a matter of doing this with minimal taking apart
and reassembling,

Jan

About this Mac>System Report>SATA/SATA Express

The SATA device report tells you the upper and lower position for each
disk. Assuming the disks are different in some way (eg capacity, SSD v
HDD) you can then tell where each is.

Bear in mind the upper position is in the bottom of the machine when
you open it up as you flip it on its top (I think).

It's not that hard to take it apart if you want to get at the upper one
- you can improvise the motherboard tool with a section from a
coathanger. I did this recently to replace a dud SSD in a 2012 i7 Mini.

The iFixit site used to sell teardown kits IIRC.

I bought a second-drive kit ages ago, which came with a SATA connector
and the removal tool but needless to say I couldn't find the tool -
hence the coathanger (needs to be one with stiff but bendable metal).

That's it, thanks. It hadn't occurred to me to look under SATA.
I only looked under 'Storage'.
Strangely enough SATA reports only the start-up disk. (it is in lower)
It doesn't report the other one.
'Storage' does report both disks.

That's what I thought too, so it must be correct :-)

You don't really need the special tool. (if you are careful)
And yes, you really do need to be careful.
I did see an advertisement once for a cheap Mini, needing repair,
because a component on the motherboard had been broken off,

Jan
(didn't buy it)

Any two pins in the holes will do.
Hint on ordering: I once tried to install a second drive in a Mini.
Ordered the upgrade kit, and it turned out that
the single drive in it was in the upper bay.
The seller had removed the lower drive with its SATA cable,
so I had two upper SATA cables. They can be made to fit,
but not comfortably.

Found out the next time round that Amazon sells second drive kits
with have both cables.
So the hint: look what you have before you order,

Jan

Why?

Are you doing this for monetary reward?

How /often/ might you be doing this, Jan?

Yes, I've done it a few times on an 2011 Mini with a couple of screwdrivers.
But it is in tight and takes quite a bit of force.
