Hippy bathdays all round for unrats KR, Rob and Mike, wherever they
are. (I know KR is around, Rob is moving in exalted circles and Mike was
last heard from working for community radio in Kernow but that was years
ago)

And many happy returns to all from me too. Cakes and drinks at the
Bridge Farm cafe? Should we ask Fallon for one huge cake with
candles and all the names on or individual ones? If the latter who
wants chocolate, who wants lemon drizzle and who wants cheesecake?

Mike Brown is a regular presenter on Fridays (and other days I think) on
CHBN Truro - listen on your internet connected device. I drop in on him
every few weeks and often get a request played.

I have not been here - but thank you all for your kind thoughts. This
was one of those large birthdays and so we went away to Iceland where I
am pleased to say it was unseasonably warm for the time of year, the
tour guide remarking it was rare to be able to see the Northern Lights
without frozen toes. We had heavily invested in thermal vests, socks,
gloves and hats, none of which were needed as it about the same
temperature there as here! Allegedly it does not get as cold these days
in Iceland.

No volcanic eruptions and programme followed. A country for which that
well known person Churchill organised an invasion force and subsequently
independence - at least according to the tour guide. I have a feeling
he knew we were English and promoted Churchill over any one else who
might have been involved.

I'd like to see those lights too and frozen toes have put me off. Less
cold would be encouraging.

Some of the last two or three lots where Carol has told us about them
(and shown pictures people have sent in) have been seen in Kent and even
Cornwall! Unfortunately, it's always after the event; I wish they could
find a way to tell us in advance when they're going to be visible here!

They have, by measuring geomagnetic activity. Don't know how far ahead the

I understood that Iceland, like New Zealand, has it's own built-in
central-heating system and doesn't get as cold as one might expect.

I didn't know about that before. I suppose I shouldn't have been
surprised though: go to Google and type the words, British Invasion
Of... and the list of Google suggestions seems endless.

Congarats on the significant number and I'm delighted that you had an
excellent time. Did you deliberately avoid telling your daughter that
you were going away so that when you came home and she asked where you
had been you could give the classic answer?

Iceland and Alaska met office equivalents both provide forecasts of
where the lights might be seen and the strength which are then
published. I assume they are not sufficiently frequent in the UK for
our met office to do the same.

The people of Iceland more or less demanded that Churchill arrange an
invasion as protection to make them feel safe. He needed a guaranteed
route for air traffic to and from US and Canada so was happy to oblige.

No - they all knew unfortunately.

If you download the app it will notify you (pleasingly, Android has an
'Aurora' sound) when something is happening. When the app sounds (and if
it is clear and dark), I go down to the beach here and join dozens of
others whose phones have also got excited.

They used to, but this final email explained the situation:

>Date: Thu, 24 May 2018 16:19:28 +0000
>
>Dear AuroraWatch UK subscriber,
>
>It’s with great sadness that we are going to have to close the AuroraWatch UK email alert system with immediate effect. This doesn’t mean that we’re shutting down AuroraWatch, it’s just that we won’t be sending out any more alerts via email. You will still be able to get alerts via social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Telegram and via our smartphone apps (https://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/alerts/)." rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/alerts/).
>
>We know that this will disappoint some users. We’re also very sad, but this is something we’ve been putting off for some time. Operating a reliable mailing list service for 100,000+ individuals requires constant effort and ongoing resources. Up to now, we have been able to undertake this service (for free) amid our research and teaching activities at Lancaster University, but that effort is no longer sustainable.
>
>Since AuroraWatch UK started almost 20 years ago, long before Facebook and smartphones, technology has moved on. Today AuroraWatch UK has almost 100,000 Twitter followers and almost 200,000 likes on Facebook meaning that email is a relatively small fraction of the AuroraWatch UK alerts issued. Nevertheless, the maintenance of the email infrastructure puts a considerable burden on the team and provides the most headaches, e.g. bouncing emails, delayed alerts, sign-up problems and mis-identified spam. By focussing on social media alerts we will benefit from more robust and efficient infrastructure.
>
>Some of you might be wondering if this is related to the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that comes into effect from tomorrow (25 May 2018). The honest answer is that GDPR has contributed to the decision. We’re very proud that AuroraWatch UK has always operated within the spirit of what the new GDPR is trying to achieve - we take privacy and data security very seriously. However, we face challenges demonstrating when consent was received to store the email addresses of some 20,000 legacy users. Furthermore, the GDPR could result in significant financial penalties in the event of data loss. The upshot of this is that we will be securely deleting your subscription email address shortly.
>
>If you’re not already signed up to receive alerts via the AuroraWatch UK social media feeds, then you can find out more information on the Alerts page of our website at https://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/alerts/

>Once again, we’re sorry that we’ve have to make this decision, but we hope you will still wish to receive our alerts through other channels.

By the very definition of "news," we hear very little about the dominant
threats to our lives, and the most about the rarest, including terror.
