There is currently an aurora alert - red status! Too light now, of
course, but it looks as if it may persist into darkness, so look north
after sunset. If you can't see anything at first, try taking a photo (on
night mode, if possible) on your phone, which picks it up more easily
than mere eyes - but once you know where to look you can often then see
the ribbons and streaks for yourself.

Whenever there is mention of an astronomical event that is ‘visible to the
naked eye’, it seems to me that Earley is shrouded in clouds….

Same here usually - but tonight I can see moon and a star, so I think
it's clear. But no sign of lights - at least, I don't think so. There's
a small hill to the north of me, so I'm cut off from the absolute
horizon - I'm no good at angles, but I'd guess 5-10 degrees above the
horizon is my limit. Does that (and my location!) means I'll never see?
Since I never have, I don't really know what I'm looking for; I'm never
sure, for example, when they show them on TV, whether they're speeded
up, or whether you actually see them moving.

I can see the moon clearly, but not (of course) in the north. North is past the church tower.

It is a 20 minute walk to the church, but the view of the tower is so clear because the line of sight is acros playing fields and allotments.

One of my Grey Tuncles is buried there, on the south side, but most of the graveyard is on the south and north sides.
