It must be aluminium amalgam formation (aluminium almost but not
quite dissolving in mercury) but what a spectacular reaction, it must be
quite exothermic to develop that much lift. The precise mechanics of the
reaction are hard to figure out.

Aluminium forms a thin skin of aluminium oxide which prevents it
oxidising further IYSWIM. If the mercury goes onto a scratch in the
surface, it inhibits the formation of the oxide layer and also dissolves
a little of the aluminium, which is then able to react with the air
above the mercury. The mercury just acts as a catalyst.

While I can't explain the exact reason it happens, this reaction is why
carrying mercury on aircraft is sehr streng verboten. Even mercury
thermometers are banned, just in case they crack.

No matter how well you clean up after even a tiny spill, the mercury
acts as a catalyst and can convert a very large amount of aluminium into
something with very little strength. The usual cure is to scrap the
affected piece and any in contact with it.
