After years of feeling smug that I had never had Covid.

Felt crappy last week , thought it was just a heavy cold.
Noticed I couldn't really taste stuff, so as a wee test tried tasting a
finger dipped in chilli powder this led to me digging a couple of covid
tests out of the cupboard.
Guess who was positive ?

Mind you only reason I knew it was Covid was a self administered test.
Very tame compared to most of the horror stories (I suspect I have
something nearing the Omicron variant than the Delta).

As soon as the tests are negative shall re-enter the world, rather
than self isolating for a further twelve days (can't remember the
details anyway).

I fully understand Covid was a much deeper threat a couple of years ago.
But as of now I feel I have got to think that something which you have
to take a test to tell you you have it, is no longer much of a threat

The catch with that is the risk of passing it on to one of the poor
ignored sods who are vulnerable, and will have to shield themselves (ie
give up on having a life) for ever if nobody else bothers about it. Or,
of course, to someone else who ... and, recurse.

I also tested +ve for a few weks with no symptoms, and have heard others
say the same. I also have friends who had it and said it was very
horrible for a long time.

Please, wear a mask ?

Get well soon.
My wife and me both tested positive after the family Easter
get-together. My first bout, her second. It was ~ a bad cold
that lasted 2 weeks ; followed by ~ a month of a sporadic
tickle-cough.
Like 95 % of the general public here-abouts we've stopped
wearing the masks except for the rare occasion when we're
in a crowded indoor location.

Sorry to hear that. We've all got a bit lax now, what with familiarity,
vaccines and dexamethazone, but it's still very much out and about. Get
better soon.

It seems to be regarded more like the common cold nowadays. The booster
jabs are probably helping those of us who are vulnerable due to age
and/or infirmity.

Long covid seems to be the bigger problem now. I had covid big time
before we knew what it was, back in Dec 2019. (I live in York, and that
is where UK outbreaks began.) But long covid is still with me with
breathlessness and weakness when I try to do anything at all strenuous,
even walking.

Folks don't seem to be getting long covid now.

To paraphrase some learned person or other, "the catch with that is
where do you stop".
I could never go out and never expose any one to anything I might carry.
(Remember I could not tell from the symptoms that it was Covid. I had to
test for it)
that puts me in the same sort of boat as the other poor buggers who have
to isolate forever.

Some people are completely asymptomatic to some very serious diseases
where do you draw the line "I shan't go out and expose someone to X even
though there is no evidence that I have X."

A bit like Typhoid Mary (Mary Mallon). She really did exist and killed a
number of people. She did not set out to kill people, but to make a
living. She was a long term symptomless carrier of Typhoid whose only
way of making a living and keeping body and soul together was to work.
The only work she knew was cooking/housekeeping, which made her lethal
to her employers.

In the early 20th Century there was no antibiotic treatment which would
have cleared the salmonella sp. from her gut and she ended up
incarcerated in an isolation hospital until she died.

Turning to Covid, we can at least know when we have stopped shedding the
virus, the problem is that it would appear that not all of us show
symptoms when we have been infected. I am not aware of permanent long
term carriers, although it took me 3 weeks before I stopped shedding
virus particles and my infection was very mild (only 2 days of a quite a
small rise in body temperature). Have I been infected since and not
realized? Who knows.

I do wear a mask when ever I am on a bus or indoors with non-family
members, to protect myself and others. As you said, when do we stop? Our
faces are important for interpersonal communication and masks distort
voices, a lot.

But you said there was evidence ?

Testing yourself if you think you mght have it is probably a good idea.
If the test tells you you do, trying to avoid passing it on would be nice.
Nailing the doors up and painting black crosses on them would probably
be going too far. HTH.

Whingeing in t'shed? Me? Tried it once. Got the piss taken out of me! I
have now joined the piss-takers.

The health problems are on-going but one has to adapt, or give up.

I've now banned myself from doing live radio as the wheezing is
noticeable on mic. I now pre-record from home. That means I can edit out
the bad bits and I don't have to climb the radio station stairs to get
to the studio.

My voice has got huskier (not like a Husky). But it has been said it's
sexier. I'll take that for now.

I'm still enjoying the caravan. Lugging it around the lanes is the fun
bit*. Setting up on site can be exhausting. It's five minutes effort
twixt ten minute sit downs to get my breath back, but worth it.

Other campers offer to help but I politely decline. When I can't do it
messen, I'll stop.

*I do use a tow motor.
