I have quite a lot of creeping cinquefoil spreading through groups of
perennials, which make it difficult to dig out, so it flourishes. If I
can paint a few leaves of the cinquefoil with glyphosate, will that be
enough to allow it to spread through the whole plant, i.e. along the
runners, and kill it all?

Dunno. In such circumstances I tend to repeat the application once or
twice. Doesn't it tend to be evergreen, which might make it more
susceptible early in the year when the other perennials have yet to appear?

Be thankful you haven't got Spanish bluebell! After "eradicating" this a
few years ago it appears to be re-establishing itself. I've pulled off
all the flowers, and will spray it with glyphosate at 2 - 3 week
intervals for at least 3 months.

Yes, it is evergreen, but so are some of the 'perennials' it's got
into.

I used to have Spanish bluebell. I managed to dig a lot of them out
when I reconstructed the garden after the builders had finished
trashing what was there before. There are a few Spaniards left, and
every couple of weeks I cut down diagonally beside them with a
narrow-bladed paint scraper (an invaluable gardening tool!), although
an old kitchen knife would do, and cut the bluebell stems below ground
level. I'm slowly winning!
