Somerset won by an innings in three days .

Disappointingly Rew only made 25. He looked comfortable but too soon to make a judgement of the teenager. The batting star for Somerset Bartlett with 121 .

Middlesex's batting was shambolic . The opener Stoneman scored 60 and the keeper Simpson 57*

Craig Overton looked good order an Jack Leach picked up some welcome .
wickets by a spinner.

Disappointing Peter Siddle and Matt Henry were selected for pace bowling duties for Somerset despite Somerset's wealth of English pace bowlers,eg Aldridge and and Ben Green ... RH

Completely irrelevant. What matters is the fact that English players are being denied opportunity. rH

No point confusing Robert with facts! Somerset are, rightly,
picking what they see as the best team. As your figures show, Aldridge
and Green have had their chances, and have not /yet/ managed to do well
enough to hold down a regular slot. They are young enough to play again
and perhaps make the grade; otherwise, in a year or three they will,
like most young professionals, drop out of contention. With different
squads for CC, ListA and T20* [and not to mention the women], and with
rotation [esp of pace bowlers# and of overseas players], cricket is
employing more players than ever before* [inc more "English" players,
however sensibly defined], and supporting them better.

_____
* By way of example, Notts used 29 players in their 1st XI in 2022,
of whom 23 played regularly in at least one form of the game, and
19 further players in their 2nd XI. For comparison, in the '50s
and '60s, there was typically a "playing staff" of 15-18 [I don't
know how the 2nd XI players fitted in to that]. I expect other
counties have similar statistics.

# Such as Siddle, Henry, Aldridge and Green!

Dear oh dear. The point I made in my initial post was the denial of opportunity to English pace bowlers. The quality of foreign players is irrelevant.. County cricket should be for English players not foreigners.

Poor old Bounded Mind. RH

Oh dear more outrage Karen Henderson?
They have had opportunities before and Ben Green's performances in the 2nd XI have not been worthy of a 1st XI place.
Why would you want worse players in the team?
The object of a team is to win matches with the best possible results and that means you select the best possible team.
All over the world and throughout history this is what teams have done.
Now off you go back to idiot land Karen Henderson.

The usual object, you mean. In the village idiot's ideal world,
cricket in England would cease altogether. To that end, he makes
satirical suggestions that the selectors, whether at county or
international level, should pick players who can barely bat or bowl to
anything like the required standard.

Cheers,

I fully support English cricket and the England cricket team.
I want the county championship players to play against and with the very best cricketers available.
If a players is mediocre at best in the 2nd XI he wouldn't be a choice for the 1st XI and he would be a total lemon at test standard.
Perhaps this is what you want for English cricket, it looks very much like it.
Unlike you, I certainly don't agree with selection on childish, petty ethnic, criteria.

Whether one should allow people whom the England selectors must ignore
to play in the CC is one question. I can see the merits of the
argument that there should be none. It's easy to draw a very simple
line and say that this is the best team this country can offer.

I don't believe it would result in a better England team: far too many
England players have attested to the benefits of hanging around in
dressing rooms with world-class players from different cricketing
cultures for there not to be benefits which those new to elite cricket
can accrue by having strong players from other cultures to talk to.

But if you want to ban them, so be it.

The village idiot is quite happy for New Zealanders like Stokes or
South Africans like Strauss who arrived as children to be counted as
English, but not West Indian child emigrants like Chris Jordan or
Devon Malcolm. If that weren't enough to prove mental deterioration,
thinking that being a devout Muslim automatically disqualifies
Midlander Moeen Ali requires such twisted vile bigotry as to be
profoundly un-English.

Cheers,

Mike

When you used the word "wealth" about Somerset's "English pace bowlers",
I thought you were implying something about their quality. I now see
that you just meant that they have a lot of them.

And yet more "English" [however sensibly defined] pace bowlers are
playing than ever before. As I pointed out in my PP, Notts [which we can
assume are reasonably typical in this regard] currently employ approaching
3x as many cricketing staff as in the period 1950-70, over 2x as many
regular 1st XI players, and pace bowlers are a higher proportion of the
staff than ever before. So the idea that English pace bowlers are being
denied opportunities is utter rubbish. Any who are any good are being
picked up, cosseted, trained/coached and given ample 1st XI opportunities.
Even you can't really expect those who are no good to be playing regularly.

>> The quality of foreign players

Not so. See MH's nearby article for part of the reason.

>> County cricket should be for English players not

Not so. The /England/ team should be for English players [within
whatever qualification rules are deemed suitable]. County cricket is for
the benefit of the county. As long as counties are producing enough high-
quality players to produce the England squads, the authorities should [and
largely do] leave them to mind their own businesses. The England squads

attracting spectators, sponsorship, new players, ...].
