1. This is the first June Test match played at The Oval since opening in 1845
2. Both captains are playing their 50th Test
3. The ICC has prepared a backup pitch in case climate protesters damage the playing surface
4. WTC finals have a reserve day. Only to be used to make up lost time (match ends once lost time made up). So a day 5 draw is still possible if no lost time.
5. The pitch looks VERY green

So, the neutral venue curator gets to decide the state of the pitch
since NEITHER Aus nor India can influence him.

He can bet shitload of money and influence the outcome of the game in
favor of Australia by making it VERY GREEN, IF he wants to.

Surely this is better than having either of the teams prepare it, no?

You can probably say this of the Oval pitch for most of the CC games this season and they haven't all been over in two days - but actually I do think that it's done more this year than previous years.

Seems to have a bit of pace. To my expert eye, I'd say these guys are bowling at about 300mph. Trust me!

Yeah Yadav and Thakur fucked it up and RELEASED the pressure.

Thakur got Warner with pure luck rather than skill in the end.

In the end, it doesn't matter right, whether home team curator bets
money and prepares a pitch heavily favorable to home team or a neutral
ground curator does it.

So they have effectively told the protesters that they need to damage two pitches?

No.

They told the protestors that they will let the protestors damage the
first pitch BUT NOT the second pitch.

How does this compare to other Test venues in England? Have many started in June? Is there some reason The Oval starts are "late" (if they are indeed late)?

No "reason"; merely a long tradition of hosting the last Test
of a series there. Somewhat additionally, until reasonably modern times,
it was normal for a tour [both in England and elsewhere] to start with a
long period of acclimatisation before the serious business started, so
that the whole series was "late". These days, with most top cricketers
playing all year round in a variety of countries, they don't bother.

Not really, because there weren't normally back-to-back Tests in those days. The first Test of the summer would usually be in early June, and the last in mid to late August. Now they cram a 5-Test series into a month and a half.

If the curator is trying to make money on bets, they won't tend to get very good odds on the home team. They'd do better to put their money on they away team and prepare the pitch to suit them (although that would be more likely to look suspicious).

I'd imagine that if the groundskeeper were found to be betting on
matches, whether or not involving his own pitch, he would no longer be
a groundskeeper.

Cheers,

For example this Nagpur India vs Australia test where the curator
DELIBERATELY PREPARED a VERY GREEN PITCH like Gabba to make India LOSE
the test in order to HUMILIATE BCCI president with whom the local board
president has a GRUDGE on.

https://sports.ndtv.com/cricket/ganguly-bhajji-chickened-out-of-nagpur-test-hayden-1576072
"The curator, a famously single-minded character with no love of the
Indian hierarchy, ignored pleas to shave the deck and left a healthy
covering of grass. It reminded me of Gabba (In Brisbane).
To have that sort of wicket for the deciding Test of an away series -
particularly in India - was the most pleasant surprise imaginable,"
Hayden wrote.

Are there any ICC rules that the curator cannot bet on matches.

What if they get their friends and family to bet on matches.

The groundskeeper should be making pitches suitable England, I mean
the team and the geographical region.
