It causes me a great deal of regret and remorse
that so many people are unable to understand what I write.

Bucket of paraffin? Heck no.

I have seen with my own eyes a mechanical typewriter in a large metal box, on a
spinning table, with a nozzle of solvent pouring over it. ISTR being told it was
"Varsol" aka Stoddard solvent aka white spirit. They stuck it in there "for an
hour or so". Looked like a large metal dishwasher! I saw the typewriter being
removed and the rubber roller bits being wiped down with Something, presumably
rubber rejuvenator. There ends the evidence of my eyes...

This was in an repair shop that "did" typewriters, electric appliances,
lawnmowers, broken tools, ... anything that got carried in.

To err is human. To really foul things up requires a computer and the BOFH.
