Freetown Way will be returning to two lanes of traffic, with the cycle lanes being moved onto the pavement, after Hull City Council secured Government funding for the redevelopment.

The reconfigured road will not be completed until well into the new year, with work set to start early in 2024, following further design work later this year. The segregated cycle lanes currently in use, which reduced Freetown Way to a single lane for motorists in each direction, were funded by the Government as part of a roll-out of an Active Travel scheme during the early part of the pandemic.

However, since the changes were made, lengthy traffic queues have become a regular sight along the route, particularly on the approach to Blundell's Corner, where Beverley Road meets Spring Bank and Ferensway. Following the announcement that Freetown Way would return to two lanes of traffic, motorists in Hull were quick to give their verdict on the plans.

Barbara was relieved, saying: "Finally, a common sense approach that works for all users and reduces congestion. Shame it's not till next year but at least it's being thought about sensibly this time (hopefully!)."

Rita gave the council her support, commenting: "Labour did no consultation had no idea the chaos it has caused with implementing miles of cycle lanes and wasted the grant so hopefully back to some good planning to get the city moving from the Liberals."

Dave seemed to think the plans were a step in the right direction: "Freetown way was perfect how it used to be. 2 lanes and a cycle lane. I never had any issue cycling on it."

Sonia, on the other hand, felt it should have been done much sooner, and at less cost: "What a complete waste of money. It should have been improved this way in the first place. Running cycle lane along the foot path."

Gary agreed, adding: "It should never have been done this way in the first place. KuHCC were warned before it was installed it would cause chaos. But they dogmatically and arrogantly ignored the warnings."

Emma was taking no prisoners: "What a waste of money, should have cycle paths added to the pathways, it's too Dangerous. Cars crossing cycle paths who would have ever thought of that! I hope the person involved got sacked."

Alan also felt the council had made the wrong decision initially. He said: "Another Hull city council failure, it was obvious to any one with common sense that with little work the pavements could have been adapted for cyclists in the first place."

Stephen questioned how the changes would affect bus lanes: "What’s happening with the bus lanes operating times? It’s ridiculous that you have to wait next to an empty bus lane because the car in front is waiting to turn right."

Jim couldn't believe his eyes: "Someone should go to jail for the stunning incompetence! We all said the day they did that it was a terrible idea and now they're putting it back to two lanes after all that traffic, road works, millions spent and wasted!"

Michelle questioned how effective the changes would be: "I can’t see what it will achieve, if all other surrounding roads stay as they are, it’ll have a bottleneck effect."

Steve had similar worries, commenting: "No good though if Spring Bank and North Bridge are to remain one lane. If that's the case, leave Freetown Way as it is."

Finally, John summed up how many were feeling, saying: "Nobody ever seems to be held to account for the waste of public money."

There is no need for chav-lanes for chav-cyclists at all.

Interesting 🤔 the survey above said bus lanes and road works were the bigger issues than cycle lanes. I know it’s not scientific but interesting to note and also if there was so much anger about cycle lanes from motorists why did most not vote and Labour still do well with the Lib Dem’s not winning a landslide? About 20% turnout I hope everyone on here voted 🗳️ and I hope people who want rid of cycle lanes don’t moan when the road is closed to make these improvements next year. 🚧
