Jos Buttler: England's ODI old guard are not finished yet
Exclusive: England white-ball captain says that tri-series may be the way to help the ODI format survive after this month's World Cup

At training before the first ODI against New Zealand last month, Jos Buttler received a reminder that his squad for the World Cup, which starts on Thursday, is getting on a bit.

“We did a fielding session where it was old versus young, and 32-year-olds were making it into the young team,” said Buttler, who himself turned 33 this month.

Buttler’s team touched down in Guwahati earlier week after a 38-hour journey. They know that, after more than eight years of evolution without any overhaul, this tournament represents something of a last dance. There might be a T20 World Cup next year, but not everyone is involved in that. In the increasingly marginalised ODI format, there will be a significant changing of the guard after this tournament.

Eight of the 15 were victorious at the 2019 World Cup, and seven played in the final. David Willey was the unlucky loser when selecting that squad, but has made it this time. In the past month there has been a little more generational change, with Jason Roy replaced by Harry Brook, which Buttler described as “an incredibly difficult conversation”. Even with that change, twice as many players are over 33 (eight) as under 30 (four).
