England vs India World Cup 2023

England 98/8 at 29.2 overs

When India got all out for 229, I thought England did a terrific job of
restricting them to 229 and were on course to win the match but the way
they BATTED is pathetic to put it mildly.

Joe Root, Butler, Bairstow, Malan (except one game) were all out of form.

England Coach, team management and Captain FAILED to IDENTIFY the
problem with the team and FIX it for almost 4 weeks now.

It is unacceptable for a defending champion to LOSE 5 games out of their
first Six games and be worse than Netherlands and Afghanistan in the table.

There is NO determination and application from England batsmen. When the
need of the hour is to be in survival mode, Stokes swung wildly in
offensive mode and got bowled.

I expected England to be in the Semis BEFORE the tournament started. I
was wrong.

Pitched outside off and hit leg, looked to have a bit of zip off the
pitch too. It was a dopey shot to play to a great delivery.

Enter Ben Stokes. There was a rebuilding job to do here, and given the
team’s position, an achievable run rate and a brilliant bowling attack
at their undeniable best some circumspection seemed advisable. Stokes,
so often a wonderful judge of moments and situations, seemed just the
man for the task. At least until his second delivery, at which he
charged wildly, and he proceeded to look desperately uncomfortable for
the remainder of his brief time at the crease, harrassed constantly by
Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, before he played a ludicrous sideswipe at a
straight one from the latter without having scored and became the first
of his four victims. It was mindless batting, in this or any context;
Stokes has been right about one thing at this World Cup: he’s not the
messiah. He’s a very naughty boy.

I don't think he was uninterested. It's not in his nature ever to give
less than 100% effort. But I do wonder if it was a mistake to recall him
when only half-fit. If nothing else, it served as a major distraction.

But Stokes retired from ODIs because he wasn't interested.

Buttler thought recalling Stokes for ODIs will work like Stokes did to
Moeen for Ashes series.

I didn't say he gives less than 100%.

It's just that he came back from injury, still can't bowl and hence
England should have probably persisted with Jason Roy and Brook instead.

Not because he wasn't interested but because he found his workload too
heavy. That might imply that he found bilateral ODIs less interesting
than Tests and T20s, since he didn't give those up instead. But I
imagine he finds the ODI WC more interesting than those bilateral ODIs,
or he wouldn't have agreed to come out of retirement. He was clearly
motivated to help England do well.

It's been anything but bazball, as a lot of the time England seem to
have been strangely timorous. Given that Crawley and Duckett score vin
Tests at pretty much an ODI tempo, I wonder if some way should have been
found to get them into the WC squad, difficult thought that would have
been. It seems unlikely that they would have played so timidly as most
of our batsmen have.

I worry that Stokes', Root's and Bairstow's struggles and resulting lack
of confidence will feed across into the upcoming Test tour to India, as
they are the core of our Test batting.

well all of them seem to demonstrate a certain lack of patience and
unwillingness to just push singles etc rather than go for big shots,
they seem to get frustrated and then get themselves out often.
i cant see the test series being anything but another 5-0 hammering.
i dont know what this go harder mindset really means, but its not
working for the odi team. However if they do finish bottom, at least
they wont have to go to Pakistan for this champions odi tourny,
whenever it is, if it happens.

I don't know about 5-0, but it's hard to see England winning or even
tying the series when you look at the quality of India's attack.
