Synchronising files with a backup copy has one big disadvantage. When you
delete the wrong file it deletes the backup too. I have never lost any data
due to a hardware failure. I have lost data because of PBCAK.

I copy my files to a backup device and for some files I keep copies whenever
a file is altered so I have all the historical versions too. Once a year or
so I either ditch the old files or get a bigger disk.

I use an old, now unsupported program called SynchronX, which
synchronises two selected directories. If a file only exists in one
directory, it copies it to the other. It updates files to the other
directory if they have been edited since the last time it was run. If
both copies have been updated, it lets you know there is a problem with
that file before synchronising.
