I think our allotments have a serious outbreak of this on onions,
shallots, etc. Perhaps it was the weather.

Advice seems rather drastic.

says "When the onions have been infested there is no treatment for them,
chemical or otherwise. Remove all parts of the infected plants and burn
them."

I thought I might cut them off at ground level and see what grows back.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Any other suggestions?

In future I will either start growing under fine net, or get them
started indoors, and plant out in May.
