A cyclist was struck by an unmarked police car in St Giles in the early hours of this morning, Thames Valley Police confirmed.

The force said the cyclist, a man in his 20s, suffered injuries to his arm and leg. He was taken to hospital, where he remains.

A spokeswoman for Thames Valley Police said the unmarked police car, which was responding to an emergency call and had its blue lights and sirens activated, was involved in the collision with the cyclist at around 3.30am this morning (June 11).

“An investigation is ongoing,” she said.

The police vehicle was responding to an unrelated emergency incident in the city centre, in which the cyclist was not involved.

The cyclist's injuries were not life-threatening or life-changing, police said.
By 8.30am this morning, St Giles had reopened in both directions to traffic.. However, a number of spray markings could be seen on the road – thought to have been left by officers investigating the crash, which happened outside the Lamb and Flag pub.

The markings appeared to show that the police vehicle narrowly missed a council parking meter.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about it, is asked to contact Thames Valley Police online or by calling 101 and cite the reference number 43230255906.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has been approached for comment.

Isn't it an offence to fail to give way to an emergency vehicle
displaying blue flashing lights and sounding its two-tone horn?
