Swansea is in for a big weekend of cycling as two major bike ride events are set to take place. The Gower Bike Ride and Swansea Gower Sportive will challenge riders on Sunday, June 25, along different routes suited for different abilities.

For nearly 40 years the Gower Bike Ride has been part of Swansea’s summer calendar. This year, there will be two routes of 12 and 35 miles for the developing cyclist or those who are rediscovering their love of cycling. Both routes are all on road and are said to be suitable for all types of bike. The highlights of the 35-mile route will include Welsh Moor and North Gower with just over 2,000 feet of climbing.

Swansea Gower Sportive, meanwhile, will include a comprehensive tour of the Gower Peninsula with a new route for 2023, featuring highlights which include Langland, Caswell, Welsh Moor, Rhossili, Port Eynon and Oxwich. The sportive is a total distance of 63 miles and over 4,000 feet of climbing for the experienced rider.

The Gower Sportive starts at 8am, and The Gower Bike Ride, which supports charity Ty Hafan, begins at 9am, with the starting point at The Secret Beach Bar and Kitchen in Oystermouth Road. The Secret will also be open for anyone wishing to purchase refreshments before the ride, and there are toilet facilities there. Registration opens at 8.30am following the departure of the Sportive riders, and participants will be required to wear a wristband at all times.

The route will be fully signed with 12 and 35-mile options. Marshals will be at the event and will help to ensure difficult junctions can be negotiated more safely, but they will not be there to stop traffic and organisers have warned riders they must obey the Highway Code at all times.

For those doing the 35-mile route there will be two refreshment stops during the event, at just before 10 and 30 miles. The first is at Pennard Parish Hall where you can stop for a comfort break and take on board extra liquid.. This stop will be staffed by The New Gower Church. And at just over halfway riders will be the guests of Llanrhidian Primary School, where there will be water and snacks available, and the chance to have a bacon or vegan sausage roll. All profits are used by the school and they will only be able to accept cash. Flapjacks, bananas and water will also be available. At the end of the ride, organisers say participants will be able to relax with a wide range of food and drink available at The Secret.

"different abilities"?

Chav-cyclists with an IQ of more than 90 but less than 100 and the rest
who are well under 90?

QUOTE

Mrs Topping believes responsibility for the mess lies with lorry drivers
and couriers who pull into the spot when travelling through the town.

ENDQUOTE

Bin bags full of nappies? Lorry drivers and couriers?

Those aren’t just bags, they are dustbin bags, crammed full. Lorry drivers
and couriers seem an unlikely source. Perhaps no-one dare suggest who the
culprits might be for fear of legal retribution.

An infamous litter hotspot could once again be overflowing with bags of human waste following the removal of much-needed smart bins, volunteers are warning.

In June, three bright orange litter bins were installed in a lay-by on the A146, just outside Beccles.

The bins were part of a Suffolk Waste Partnership trial to reduce litter on the county’s trunk roads.

And the arrival of the bins came just months after Beccles Bombles, a local litter picking troupe, discovered a mountain of urine-filled bottles, used nappies and bags of human waste in the lay-by.

While they proved an instant success and curbed the amount of waste being dumped, the trial ended earlier this month and the bins have since been removed.

Waveney District councillor Caroline Topping, who leads the Beccles Bombles, believes the move could be disastrous.

She said: “It is a horrendous hotspot for human waste. Lorry drivers, caravans, fisherman or people who stop to eat their McDonald’s and look over the river all stop in there.

“Now there are just two bins which are overflowing. It’s going to cause litter to fall into the bushes.”

Before the bins were removed the area had undergone a complete transformation.

Mrs Topping added: “One of the Bombles went along to the area four weeks ago; they went around the whole area, including the quay and only got half a black bag of rubbish.

“At the end of the day the bins are being used. If they are not there we are going to get fly-tipping and littering.

The councillor fears the removal of the bins will also herald a return of the dumping of human waste in the area.

“There is not enough provision in my opinion. Lorry drivers pull in there, they are going to have to go somewhere, and if that is the normal thing; to use plastic bottles to take their fluids and plastic bags to take their solids – then they are going to have to get rid of them.”

A Suffolk Waste Partnership spokesman said: “Now that the project has finished the local boroughs and district councils are able to utilise the new bins in new locations if they feel this is appropriate.”
