It is the notorious Birmingham road where six people were killed in a crash tragedy the city will never forget. And since the fatal collision on Belgrave Middleway in 2017, paramedics have rushed to the aid of dozens of injured crash victims on the major route.

Last month, a cyclist became the latest victim as he was struck in an suspected hit-and-run collision. Husband-to-be Hussien Nur Teklise was riding a pedal bike when he was hit at around 2pm on May 16.

The 45-year-old dad, who left behind a two-year-old son, died at the scene. Police launched a probe into the fatality, with the driver on bail as the investigation continues.

The latest tragedy was one of six emergency - or category two - ambulance callouts to crashes on Belgrave Middleway in the past six months alone. Paramedics also attended a seventh urgent, or category three, call to a collision there this year.

New Freedom of Information data from West Midlands Ambulance Service detailed the total number of call-outs to road traffic collision victims on the busy route. In the past six years, paramedics have rushed to 83 crashes where people were badly hurt - averaging more than one a month.

The 999 calls included one life-threatening - or category one - call, 46 emergency - or category two - calls, and 36 urgent - or category three - calls to road traffic collisions between 2018 and 2023 to date. Calls peaked during the Covid lockdown, with a total of 23 emergency and urgent call-outs during 2021, and 20 in 2020 - including one life-threatening call out.

In 2019, paramedics were called to treat victims involved in 11 crashes, and in 2018, there were 12 callouts. The year before, the horrific Belgrave Middleway crash - the worst in 20 years - shook Birmingham.

Days before Christmas, on December 17 2017, a taxi driver, his two passengers and three men in an Audi were killed in an underpass tragedy. Speeding driver Kasar Jehangir had lost control of an Audi S3 as he tried to navigate a bend at around 1am, an inquest heard.

He crashed the car, travelling at between 94 and 100mph in a 40mph speed zone, into an oncoming taxi after crossing the carriageway.

Taxi driver Imtiaz Mohammed, 33, was killed alongside passengers Lucy Davis, 43, and her partner Lee Jenkins, 42. Four people in the Audi were ejected from the vehicle, two from the boot and two via the sunroof, an inquest had been told.

Audi passengers Mohammed Fahsha, 30, Kasar Jehangir, 25 and Tauqeer Hussain, 26, died at the scene. Zakkria Khan, also in the car, was the only survivor.
