Shirley 'Bargain Hunt' works the wrong way round?

Instead of pleading for discounts and buying from Antique Dealers, then
selling at auction, they should be buying at auction or on Ebay and
seeing what they can make at an Antique Fair?

That's how the antique trade works.

Yes I thought that as well. the place to look for things if you want to make
money is bazaars, car boot sales and the like and get there early, as the
dealers do.

A Whitby Antique and Curiosity Emporium owner of my acquaintance had
them come into his shop to set up their show. They selected certain
items and asked him to reduce the price. He told then to eff off.

And they did.

My response would likely be along the lines of "I would be glad to offer
a reduced price on camera, after you have paid me the full asking price"

I had more or less assumed that was what happened anyway. Either that or
some member(s) of the crew was bidding in the auction.

I get rather curious on the odd occasion I see BH or Cash in the
Floggery or similar, when an auction item rockets up to a sale price ten
or twenty times what was predicted, and I just wish they'd find the
bidders afterwards and ask them what caused them to bid so high.

I’ve always suspected there is an element of ‘staging’ in these programmes.

Otherwise, everyone who ventured into the shops etc would haggle and get
the huge discounts.

Or make a nuisance of themselves by wandering in and not getting huge
discounts ?

I can imagine genuine dealers regarding the whole genre with something
like contempt

Never had any trouble haggling in junk/antique shops :-)

Only if the bids amounts are are not paid in full. If they are, then the
only problem is how the bidder disposes of the item in question. As soon
as the gavel hits the desk ad payment is made, ownership is transferred.
Legally, they are then allowed to give it to, say, the second highest
bidder or even send it to landfill.

They don't put anything in the credits saying "All valuations were
correct at the time of recording" either, as the Antiques Roadshow does.

Looking at property auction results lately, though, there seems to be
very little connection between the guide price (which is what the
auctioneer in the series gives the teams) and the final selling price.
Maybe the same applies to other auctions as well?

I don't know of they still do it, but a lot of the antique shops used to
have the cost price of the article on the tag in a coded form, so they
know how low they can go and still not make a loss.

Junk shops not so much, as they pay very little out in the first place.

Non-trader car boot sale sellers tend to just want the item gone, so the
BH tactics can work there if you know what you are doing. That is why
the traders get there early, set up quickly, and wander round before it
opens with a pocket full of cash.

Is this not called haggling, does not make for good tv though, so yes things
can start early and the truth bent to suit. Do you really think, for
example that the audiences at tv shows are always so enthused? They pause
and ask the audience to go wild now and then so they can use this to edit in
applause etc, to make the show sound more live.

When I was a kid (early '60s) my parents got us tickets to watch
something being recorded (I think it was University Challenge). People
held cards up telling us when to applaud (and then when to stop).
