I suspect my Dad would have jbexed (airframe) on them in 1939, I know he
was mostly on Corsairs in the later part of the worldly unpleasantness.

Sherburn in Elmet (to the best of my knowledge) is still physically in
the same place. No doubt somewhat larger than it was when Blackburns
were molishing hairy planes there around the time of the second great
unpleasantness. The problem is that back in the early 1970s some bright
spark (step forward Zvpunry Urfrygvar) gooved it was a good idea to move
the county boundaries, and rename some of the counties, hence Sherburn
(as we generally referred to it yokelly) moved from the Wet Riding into
North Yorkshire. Something which still rankles with some thereabouts
(particularly when the boundaries of Gods own County shrank.

For those with a literary interest, Sherburn Airfield was where Air
Speed assembled their aircraft (which were built in a bus station in
York). Air Speed was set up by the author Nevil Shute.

They are/were.
At one time or another the FAA used the Grumman Martlet, Vought F4U
Corsair, Grumman Hellcat and Grumman Avenger as carrier-based aircraft
during WWII.

Indeed. But we didn't use the Wright Cyclone piston engine the mercans
used. We fitted it with a Napier Gazelle turboshaft engine.

This had an AVPIN starter, fired by cartridge, that was the cause of
several nasty cockpit fires. The pilots sat right behind the engine.

We lost one off the Vic that caught fire on its way back to land. They
didn't make it. The only thing they found was the co-pilots helmet,
belonging to Sub. Lt. Pete Dyer RN, who was an apprentice with me at
Arbroath back in the early 60s.

We had both decided to apply for aircrew. They accepted him but not me
as my legs were too long for initial fixed wing training. If I had
banged out of a Provost I would have lost them above the knee.

On the Vic I was crew chief of his Wessex. We discovered a slight AVPIN
leak. I signed the aircraft unserviceable, but the CO part two-ed the
fault so it could fly. He wanted our squadron to chalk up more flying
hours than any other front line Wessex squadron. (We did.)

According to legend, the A700 service record for that aircraft was never
found. It's probably in the South China Sea.

On return to UK, the CO was side-lined into being one of the first
curators of the FAA museum.

He tried to blame me, but I had no access to flight control, where the
A700 was kept during flight. Never got to the bottom of it all.

Fri 7th Oct 1966.

To a greater or lesser extent that was true of most single engined
fighters which had a tail wheel. During taxiing this was overcome by
taking a zigzag track across the ground. Take off involved quite a bit
of finger crossing until the tail came up, by which time it was too late
to avoid an obstruction.

It was a much greater problem where forward visibility was limited when
landing. I understand that was particularly true of the Corsair and it
was rejected by the USN for carrier operations and they dumped them on
the RN. Their attitude changed when the RN showed them how to do it,
IIRC this involved quite a lot of sideslipping during the approach to
the deck.

Not the just the county of Yorkshire was subject to mutilation by that
there Heseltine (spit) but Lancashire was hugely mutilated, it lost
Manchester, Liverpool, Widnes, Warrington and the rest of the South of
Lancashire went to Cheshire. The far North of Lancashire was passed to
Cumberland, sorry Cumbria. Barrow in Furness, well the whole of Furness,
was part of Lancashire.

Rutland was wiped off the map.

Quite a significant player in the 1930's and 40's. He left Vickers to
found, with others, Airspeed, having been Barnes Wallis' Chief
Mathematician. He had been involved in the design of the R100.

An approach invented by Winkle Brown, who also pioneered the angled

There was also the occasional problem while taxiing Spitfires (which all
happened 12 years before I was born but I do read).

one was fitted to an early Spitfire by the pilot scavenging it from his
sports car).
