Do I call in a plumber or an electrician?

Did that last time, like for like, but I'm getting too old.
I expect a different model would have different pipework and that's
beyond my abilities.

Assuming you already have an electric shower, the wiring is already
there, so a plumber is your better option. In my experience as a
plumbing and heating engineer (City & Guilds - distinction) in a
previous life, letting an electrician anywhere near water is a big mistake.

Fair enough. I was mainly being flippant, though.

There are plumbers who can legally do the whole job, and the ones that
can't always know a friendly electrician.

Yes.

Well, most of these are pretty simple to connect up. The biggest difficulty
is making good the bloody tiles as the fittings will as Mr Sod will tell
you, going to be different enough not to fit the old plumbing or holes.

Plumber, hooking up the pipework is the (potentially) hard bit and
an electrician won't have the tools or insewerants for fettling pipejbex
even if they know how.

FWIW I would be more worried about electrikery and Dihydrogen Monoxide
mixing, possibly because of different pipe work or electrikery work.

I'd probably want one who'd washed themself at least a few times in
their life.

Plus, presumably you'd start by telling them what needs doing, and
they'd know whether they can or not.

Refurbishing our local MPs house many hectafortnights ago, I had
installed new central heating, but he wanted the pipework buried in the
walls. Okay. Hard jbex, but he paid for it. I installed the pipework but
it was getting late so I came back the following day to fill and test
the system.

When I filled the system water was seeping out of a new three pin socket.

I investigated. Luckily the new electrical installation wasn't yet
connected. I found that the 'electrician' had drilled through the wall
and straight through my pipework, and fed the cable through the hole.

He hadn't checked what might already be in the wall and as it was copper
pipework, it would have showed up big and large on a detector, if he had
one.

So not impressed.

My most frequent jbex when I was doing it, was sorting out wrongly
installed or wired central heating systems. Room stats were the biggest
problem where electricians didn't seem to think they needed earthing to
jbex properly.

They do.

But to be fair I found a few systems where the central heating pumps
were installed the wrong way round too.

That's why I bought the same model (they'd updated it a bit over time,
but the 'footprint' was unchanged - including the holes for the mounting
screws).

I'm a cautious (i.e. timid) DIYer but it took me a couple of hours to
remove the old one and fit the new.

P.S. I'd call an electrician, since the water inlet is unlikely to need
changing.
I wonder if he/she will say the house needs rewiring to the latest regs?

AFAICT they electricians guild tweaks the regs every year or so to keep
everyone happily employed upgrading stuff. IANAE, you can tell.

I got a chap in who does bathrooms (plumber and general builder) who got
an electrician in for, er, the electrical bit - running the supply to
the consumer unit. However, if you already have an electric shower, the
plumber should be able to do it all as the leccy supply is already there.
