Cyclist hospitalised with 'serious injuries' after Hull e-scooter collision

It is still illegal to ride e-scooters both on public roads and footpaths

A cyclist has been seriously injured after a collision with an e-scooter on
Derringham Street in Hull yesterday morning.

The crash occurred at 6.40am (Thursday, August 4) and the cyclist was
rushed to hospital for treatment. The incident follows a push for
e-scooters to become legalised on public roads and footpaths.

E-scooters are currently only legal to purchase and ride on private
property. However, some areas of the country- including Scunthorpe - have
trialled e-scooter rentals to encourage a more environmentally friendly
mode of transport.

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: "Officers are appealing for
information regarding a collision between an e-scooter and a pushbike on
Derringham Street, Hull. It was reported that the collision occurred at
around 6:40am on Thursday 4 August.

"The cyclist was taken to hospital for treatment on serious injuries. If
anyone has any information regarding this incident, you can contact us on
our non-emergency number 101, quoting log 97 of 4 August."

Safer Roads Humber launched a campaign last year to remind people of the
law surrounding the use of e-scooters. Speaking to Hull Live in 2021, Ruth
Gore, spokesperson for Safer Roads Humber, said: "There is no doubt that
e-scooters are a mode of transport of the future – but the fact is at this
current time, the use of privately owned devices remains illegal on public
roads, cycle lanes and pavements.
