I have a water butt to collect water from the flat felted roof, which I
use maily for my indoor orchids, and azela's etc outside in this dry
weather. The water over the yeas has turned brown and there is a slime
on the inaide of the butt. I am planning to empty and clean it when we
get back to proper Welsh weather, but I have found that a couple of my
orchids have gone limp and are not looking and growing very healthily.

Could the two things be linked? and what if anything, can I do to
clean/clear the water. Our tap water is terrible, so I do not use it on
the orchids.

Many Thanks

Roger T

Can’t help with the orchid issue, but Mrs Spike swears by Citrox for
keeping water in the butts sweet for quite long periods.

I suggest you start by cleaning and disinfecting your water butt before
collecting fresh rainwater and then adding the Citrox - you can use diluted
Citrox to disinfect it as well as many gardening items.
