A cyclist has suffered serious injuries following a crash with a van in Plymouth. The collision happened in Valletort Road, Plymouth yesterday evening (Monday, July 17).

The road was closed by police just before 6pm and was reopened at 9.30pm. Eyewitnesses took pictures of emergency services at the scene and told PlymouthLive: "The bottom of Valletort Road close to the Millbridge Inn pub has been taped off by police. One police car parked in middle of the street."

A man in his 50s was taken to Derriford Hospital for a serious leg injury after being treated by paramedics at the scene.

Devon and Cornwall Police have spoken to PlymouthLive and confirmed that the incident involved a bicycle and a van. A spokesperson said: “Police were called at 5pm yesterday, 17 July, following a collision between a van and a cyclist on Valletort Road, Plymouth.

“The cyclist, a man in his 50s, sustained a serious leg injury and was treated by paramedics before being taken to Derriford Hospital.”

A man in his 30s from Plymouth has been arrested in relation to this incident, and has been released on bail until October 17.

He was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving and driving a motor vehicle with a proportion of a controlled drug above the specified limit.
