Now that Gurgle Gropes is usenet history, I have noticed a few of the
regulars coming back to some of the groups I follow.

Give it time. On one group I follow, there is a very civilised
discussion going on about ribbon microphones, with a couple of names I
don't recognise.

<Grin> It's gone *very* technical, discussing the theory behind the
benefits and drawbacks when recording a guitar amp speaker.

That's why it's important to have the right microphone.

I prefer to record off the desk if it's a concert. Recording from the
speakers is also good, but audience applause then sets the gain for the
whole recording, which means having to then edit the gain all through
the recording to get a good balance for radio. If recording off the
desk, usually by splitting the monitor feed, applause is in the
background, and the artist(s) output set max gain. Much bettererer.

Instead of having the left microphone?

What is being discussed is recording sessions where there is no
audience, and the only desk is the one operated by the recording
engineer, or the performance is being sent out live. Stuff being
mentioned includes air conditioning vents in the wrong place blowing
onto the ribbon, generating massive subsonic signals in the microphone
output, being cured by the use of a handy pair of tights, and having to
very carefully position the mic to get the performer next to it, and
obliterate another, much louder one, who has their own mic with the same
problem in reverse. Half these guys work for the BBC, the others for
major record labels round the world.

I use whatever technique is needed, and my favourite for orchestras and
choirs is to use a 4 channel soundfield mic above the conductor's head,
using the rear channels to control the room sound. One fun one was a
concert in Rouen cathedral, where the organ was so far away from the
orchestra, it was about a semi demi crochet out of sync at the
conductor's position, partially compensated for by the organist paying
his notes early, which I had to cure by careful mic positioning. I love
that recording, and so did the organist when he heard it. The
conductor's comment was "It's too quiet", but he was listening to the
raw feed off the recorder, which didn't have much power on the headphone
output. A bit of compression and tweaking in post did the job.

At a gig I recorded as a birthday present for the landlady of the pub
and a promo for the band, the only stuff going through their desk was
the vocals, so I split their mic feeds, DI'd the bass and set my own
mics up for the guitar and the drum kit. The CD sold quite well.

OMG yes, pointing two microphones that were sat next to each other at
the TV to get TOTP in stereo. The TV was mono anyway! <smh>
