This bike rider was told he had “got his comeuppance” after crashing into a bus while pulling a wheelie in Derby. Derby Crown Court heard how convicted drug dealer Armani Lowers struck the bus, which was carrying passengers, while showing off in Ascot Drive.

However, it was the 24-year-old and no one else who was injured, breaking his ankle in the process. And even more than a year after carrying out the offence he arrived at court to be sentenced still walking with the aid of crutches.

Handing him a 12-month community order, Judge Shaun Smith KC said: “When I see this on the street I can’t abide it, it’s childish. Your behaviour on that bike is something the general public is sick of, young men doing wheelies on bikes. This time you really got your comeuppance because you fell off and broke your ankle and it looks like it’s caused you a lot of trouble.”

Victoria Rose, prosecuting, said the incident took place just after 7pm on June 1, last year, close to Screwfix, near Dunstall Park Road. She said witnesses also reported seeing two other individuals on dirt bikes in the area prior to the incident.

She said: “The defendant was riding down Ascot Drive with two other persons and he does a wheelie on the bike and hits a bus.

“There were passengers on the bus but the most injured person was himself as he suffered quite serious injuries to his ankle and he is on crutches today.”

Lowers, of Tayberry Close, Alvaston, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving. In 2021 the defendant was jailed for 21 months when he pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of class A drugs.

On that occasion, the same court heard how in May of that year, police went to his address as they believed he had been involved in an unrelated incident.

But when they searched it they found wraps of crack cocaine and messages on his phone showing he had been selling it.

Lisa Hardy, prosecuting that case, said Lowers first found himself before the courts as a young teen in 2014 for using threatening words or behaviour. She said he was then dealt with for an affray which involved a large number of young people in the city in 2016.

Mrs Hardy said between then and now the defendant has amassed 11 convictions for 20 offences including conspiracy to possess a firearm, criminal damage and assault. In September of 2020, he was jailed for 16 weeks, suspended for a year for two counts of criminal damage and for using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour against police officers.

Mrs Hardy said: "On May 22 of this year (2021) there was an incident whereby he had been identified as being someone involved in a public order offence.

"As a consequence police went to his address in order to arrest him. A search led them to some paper wraps and, in essence, they were five wraps of crack cocaine.

"A phone was seized and analysed and on it there were messages between the defendant and one other person arranging to collect drugs from him. He admitted to the police he used cocaine mainly at the weekends."

As part of the new community order, Judge Smith ordered Lowers to attend 10 rehabilitation sessions and disqualified him from driving for a year.
