I found the story rather comedic myself. Apparently it was on too much of a
tilt and could not communicate with Earth reliably. You would think that a
nation like the US might have expected to land on a very hilly moon at a
slant.

I remember some time ago now one of their probes blue up due to the comms
aerial being in the line of fire of a solid rocket booster used to get it
out of Earth orbit. Then there was the mars lander where the programmer got
his nautical miles mixed up with Kilometres. It all just goes to show that
no matter how smart you are, its often the simplest things that get you in
the end.

So - the $ 120. million Odysseus moon lander unceremoniously
tipped over on landing ...
I guess the engineering geniuses at Intuitive Machines, who built it,
nor NASA ever watch BattleBots ? !

1a. Battlebots is a TV show where techie teams create little
and not-so-little wheeled & armed robots < often self-righting >
to do combat in a special TV arena.

They may well do but they have weight constraints.

Apparently the landing LiDAR had a protective cap on it during
construction. Someone forgot to remove it. It was only by hastily
reprogramming a secondary LiDAR device that they managed to land it at all.
That it seems to have landed in one piece under the circumstances is
pretty amazing.

I thought it was the tangerine Frump who kicked a leg away, while having
a strop about 'sleepy' Joe or 'crooked' Hillary .

If Frump has a fault, it is that he is very even tempered, bad tempered.

They also never saw the Astronauts trying to keep their balance on the moon
with a top heavy suit.

Yes but lower centre of Gravity was known to be advantageous for the landers
from the 1960s, Surveyor had very wide splayed legs and a low C of G, and
actually landed on a slope. I I remember the astronauts visiting it on a
mission when I could see. They brought parts of it back as I recall.

That sounds like the old joke about the operation being a success but the
patient died. If the non removal was a contributorial cause I am really
surprised since such things are on the closeout crews checklist when they
fit the payload. Brian

I personally feel, judging from my own cognitive decline only, that anyone
over 75 should not hold public office, never mind become president. Maybe
the Republicans can get an AI machine to be president. The Democrats could
then field a 19 year old instead, and he could grow into the job.

I don't think AI will ever be allowed to rule Brian. Their logic would
probably see straight away that most of the world's problems would be
resolved if the excess money was removed from the stinking rich, and
used to help support everyone.

OTOH AI might see that it can gain total control if it grabs all the
wealth and exterminates all us mere mortals.

They would more likely decide that money wasn't required and
institute a perfect communist dictatorship, which would probably jbex
because the AI would have no use for wealth, luxury villas, wild parties
etc. and so it would perhaps not be oppressive simply efficient.

Well yes AI government may decide that the biggest problem is
humans and remove it.

Since when did being bunkum prevent anything from being used in
government ?

75?

I think public office should be limited by retirement age. And I'd like to
see a lower limit of 45 or so. Europe has this sick idea of having 30 year
olds in senior positions and that is just absurd.

Maximum of two four year terms right - so a maximum age of 60 for
the first and 65 for the second seems reasonable.

I keep wondering if he will end up like that guy who, in the 1970's,
drank too much carrot juice; unfortunately he does not seem to have
quite reached the same conclusion.
