A SHOCKING video of a drink-driver colliding with a cyclist has been released by Dorset Police amid a summer crackdown on offenders.

The annual campaign, also targeting those who get behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs, began on Monday and runs across the county until Sunday.

People are urged to report suspected drink or drug-drivers, with a reminder by the force the offence is one of the “fatal five” causes of serious injuries and deaths on the region’s roads.

During the first six months of this year, officers arrested 480 people under the influence. Of these, 330 tested positive for alcohol and 214 for drugs.

Dash cam footage of the collision involving a cyclist on Stanley Road in Poole was released as a reminder of the consequences.

The rider survived and is continuing to recover from their injuries.

Having been charged with drink-driving and dangerous driving, the motorist was handed a two-year suspended jail sentence.

They were also banned from the roads for two years and told to complete 300 hours of unpaid community work.

Throughout the crackdown, police are increasing operations and reminding residents of the importance of reporting suspected offenders.

Insp. Craig Tatton, of Dorset’s roads policing team, said: "Unfortunately, we see all too often the devastating consequences of people driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

"If you think you are safe to drive after drinking or taking drugs, think again. Even the slightest amount of alcohol or drugs in your system can affect the way you drive, increasing the risk of serious harm to yourself and other road users.

"This summer, we’re urging to people who are planning to drink to consider how they will be getting home, so that a day in the sun doesn't turn into a night in a cell.”

Police and crime commissioner David Sidwick added: “Please make the right decision, don’t drive under the influence of drink or drugs and please report what you know – you may just save a life.”

Those suspecting someone of drink or drug-driving should dial 999 immediately with the vehicle information and direction of travel.
