My trusted motor engineer was to go and check out the Hymer in Newcastle
last tweak and bring it back to York for me, if okay. But some delivery
driver banged into it in the meanwhile.

Excellent repairs have been done at the seller's expense, but the
inspection and delivery arrangements were delayed for a week. And he is
on holiday this week. But he told me that his dad and his driver would
do the job and could be trusted.

I got a phone call from them and another from the broker yesterday
morning stating that the Hymer is good.

I authorised the transfer of the money. A lot of it.

The two men drove it to a filling station for fuel and then claimed it
was overheating.

They took the Hymer back. They didn't check it but I am assured by te
broker that the engine was still cold. However a gauge sensor needed
changing. Apparently the sensor was known to have failed but a service
mechanic had changed the wrong one (for a cooling fan).

The blokes were sent to a cafe to have a breakfast and were asked to
come back in an hour.

They phoned me and told me to refuse the sale after all as ‘they
couldn’t hang about’ and the cam belt and water pump were overdue for
changing. Actually that is true, but I knew about that, and both are
jbexing fine. Mileage is the real key. The Hymer hasn't done much
mileage in the last ten years. The previous owner is a keen angler, and
he's only been using it for his local fishing trips.

But, the sale had already gone through on their assurance that the
vehicle was okay. I couldn't get my money back.

It then transpired that they hadn’t road tested it before telling me it
was okay, nor had they followed my fault checklist.

Also, they hadn’t even looked underneath it because the road surface was
wet, although they were offered an inspection mat.

I phoned them and asked them to go back and collect the Hymer as it was
now deemed okay. They refused, stating that they were nearly back in
York. I pointed out that they hadn’t road tested the vehicle before
telling me it was okay. They stated they were not going to argue with me
and put the phone down on me. They had previously put the phone down on
the broker, who asked them to turn around and collect the Hymer.

I now have to drive up to Newcastle today with a trusted friend to
collect the Hymer myself as it isn't safe to leave it where it is over
Easter weekend. Neither of us are in the best of health atm. Hence
trying to hire some help. But we will effin do it!

It goes without saying I am very disappointed by their behaviour in all
of this and feel very let down by a so-called professional motor
engineering company. I've told the company owner what has happened in
his absence and I doubt he will be pleased. I think dad's in for a
severe bollocking.

I like folks to trust me. I regard myself as an honest bloke and I treat
others the same. It's the Quaker in me.

Maybe that is a failing in this modern world?

Hope things work out for you.
Your whole buying experience is so foreign to me that
I can't imagine it. I'd have personally and thoroughly
examined the vehicle - every inch - and then had
a good drive, with some highway included before even
considering an offer-to-buy. .. and that offer would
require having my mechanic check it over before closing
the deal. Plus checking it for liens ..

Trust is a rare and precious thing and must be earned; to blindly trust
that others are trustworthy may be certainly regarded as a failing.

Nah.

Toss a coin 4 times and get 4 heads. The next toss will be a tail?

50%

Toss a coin a 100 times and get a 100 heads. The next toss will be a
tail.

0.01%

The coin is likely double headed or heavily biased.

Trust? Paid for something at eTsco and one of my 1 zu coins was refused,
it was 1 Euro. I know that it was given to me in change the previous
day from, you guessed it, eTsco.

Now I am using to release a eTsco trolley. The trouble is that I am
honest and would not accept a 1 zu coin to hand over my trolley.

Yes, I think we are taught to distrust. I prefer to trust people if there
are no glaring indications otherwise. It works well - most people respond
well to being trusted, and those that don't are generally not worth
bothering with.

Speaking of lotteries . . .
At some point during the covid thing, many little-ish
operations turned to online 50-50 draws for their
fundraising. It really took-off for many of them and
has spread like the wildfires. Where the jackpot might
be a few thousand in years past - $ 200. thousand
was typical ! And even more - link below is this
month's 50-50 for a mid-sized hospital district -
$ 1.5 million <Canadian>

I do distrust a lot. (previously bitten and now very shy)

<current shenanigans>
Got an emu from a company (lets call them M )asking me to book an
appointment for a leccy meter read. It was sent to an emu address setup
solely for the use of my energy supplier (lets call them O). So it gets
dumped into the spam bucket. Reason: "not from the correct domain".

But it had my details that identify me as a customer of O .

So I send emu to O asking is this for real or a scam attempt?
O replies "nothing to do with us mate" (but with many more words and
pictures).

So it is a scam. Well caught grooves I.

Being a nice polite chap I look up company M on the interwebs (not from
the emu sent to me) and send them an alert that somebody appears to be
using their good company name to run some sort of scam.

Company M replies: "it's not a scam we really have been asked by O to do
meter reads".

sighs!

</>

The problem with on-line scams is NOT (IMHO) that the scammers are
betting better but that legitimate companies are acting more like
scammers (BICBW).

I intend to.

But another matter. Checked out the older Hymer today, in storage. The
big wooden double bed that is stored over the driving position had
dropped down on its own! It's boodly heavy! The securing leather straps
had rotted through!

If that had happened whilst I was driving it would have been curtains!

But I am in contact with a man who can repair such things, so nil
memorandum.

I'm going to put it in the Matthewson's Bangers & Cash Classic Auction
on May 1st & 2nd. That's where my first Hymer went for a fair price.

I think Hymer Hymer addict.

If it is Fiat based, then Fiat recommend every 5 years or a mileage which
few m/h reach in that time. I had ours changed at 4 years due to our m/ h
having a 2 year service cycle. It had only done about 11k miles.

This often comes up on m/h groups.

A snapped Cambelt will almost certainly wreck an engine.

It is recommended to change the water pump at the same time.

I've been going through old invoices. The cambelt was last changed in
2016, but that was only 13,000 miles ago. The advice is to change it
every five years anyway, so I will get it done. Although it's 20 years
old it's only done 73,500 miles.

After all that the X^6 fell last night and is now in horse spittle with
a broken pelvis!

I guess that excludes her from our many camping and festival bookings
for this year.

Gubber!

My dilemma now is should I cancel too, go solo, or be callous and find
an X^7?

Update.

Visited her in horse spittle over in that Leeds today. She can barely move.

They can't operate but it will heal itself eventually, but we're talking
months. She can't even get on a bed pan. I really feel for her loss of
any dignity.

Managed to get her mobile phone charged up, and left the charger with
her, so she is at least in touch with the world again. That's something.

Looks like I'll be solo camping for most of this year.

Consider digging out an old charger and/or phobile, don't leave it with
her, but just have it ready for the likely event when she is moved
wards, and one or the other is mislaid.

My mother had bought a customised wheel chair, that was marked,
prominently as her property. On hospital visits and various admittances
my brother had to spend a considerable amount of time relocating the
wheel chair.

I had a single tooth denture, which was not cheap. On admittance for day
surgery it was removed and placed in a container marked up with my name
and horse spatial number and placed on the shelf behind my bed. I had
then to be transferred for an overnight stay in the main hospital (this
was expected to be likely). I was in no position to check my personal
property and it did not follow me (I was still paralysed below the
waist). The cleaners threw it in the rubbish.

It seems hospital staff are trained to ignore notes and names
sttsched to personal effects.

A couple of weeks ago, I was at the local dental hospital. I popped
into the khazi for a piss leaving my walking stick against a table outside. I
walked out of the hospital and ten minutes later noticed I had left my
walking stick in the hospital.

I staggered back to the hospital and my stick was missing. I asked
the receptionist on that floor she had seen my walking stick, but when we
went to recover it, it was gone.

I asked at the entrance and it had not been turned in.

No problem, I have my name and number written on the stick, in the
past when I have left in restaurants etc. I get a call telling me they have
found my walking stick.

It's been three weeks, still no word about my missing walking stick.

The X^6 is in a private room at Leeds General in for Mary. I'm thinking
of getting her laptop to her, but I'm not sure how safe that would be if
ever she was taken out of the room for any reason.

My father was in hospital or care for the last 10mths of his life.

The care home managed to lose almost nothing, and were even kind enough
to box his posessions after death for collection by a friend (losing
nothing in the process), as we were in quarantine.

The hospital lost 2 mobile phone chargers, half a dozen t-shirts,
several pairs of shorts, and a few other odds and sods.

It's not like they can even have been nicking them, clothes that fit my
father would only fit a tiny number of people!

Complaints to the management yielded nothing.

I came to the bitter conclusion that NHS staff must be better paid than
we realise, if they can afford to be so careless with posessions.

Maybe a cheap second-hand tablet? Just as likely to go missing[1], but
a lower cost to replace.

[1] Strongly suggest she doesn't store any account details, passwords
etc. on it.
