Clearly there are many scam attempts along the lines of receiving a text
message saying you need to pay some extra amount to have your parcel
delivered.

So why, oh why, if you had a well known domain such as royalmail.com
would you send genuine delivery messages using a link like

<https://ryml.me/?somehorriduniqueid>

which make them look *more* like the scams?

I have never understood why organisations get multiple domains
instead of using subdomains apart from protection like when Yahoo! found a
need to register in Cameroon because someone was squatting on yahoo.cm
catching typos.

I agree

If I was going in to that sort of business, I would simply buy a domain
something like "security-update.co.uk" (thats a real domain which is
for sale right now)

Then I could direct "customers" to somewhere like
barclays.security-update.co.uk - which might look slightly more plausible

Apart from preventing cyber squatting, it seems odd, and on occasions
(such as this) distinctly unhelpful. By all means get the domains, but
just sit on them.

Hmm, spill chucker suggested caber instead of cyber. OK if it is lying
down I suppose.
