THE WHOOPER BIRD

She whooped in my lug-’ole
It was very loud
A bit of an arsehole
Not caring ‘bout the crowd

Oysterband were brill
Their last tour, whilst they could
A two night double bill
Not heard them live so good

Rousing applause
Followed every song
My anger cause?
Whoops so close and long

Decibels so high
Fingers in my ears
She whooped well above my
Ear-drum bursting fears

Protest did no good
She didn’t seem to care
Whooped loud as she could
So I got out of there

Invited by the band
I’d come all that way
She’s just a theatre hand
She didn’t even pay

I couldn’t stay

Settle Victoria Hall
Oyterband’s Last Tour
20th & 21st April 2024

Ah yes, my last live thingy was Bee Gees at the BBC 2001, and not only were
there over enthusiastic whoopers in the place but whistlers as well. One got
the impression that the Beeb wanted a noisy crowd to make up for the smaller
venue.

I personally feel that audiences have gone like they did in America, which
was more like a sporting crowd and merely by a famous name making an adlib
gives them an excuse to make a noise.
Its all turned around. Time was with bands like Status Quo, that you needed
earplugs for the performance, but now you need it for the audience. Going
back to 1976, the audience for Carpenters were very enthusiastic, but
nowhere near as loud as you get today. Brian

I saw an interview with one of the Beatles once. He said they gave up
playing live because they got sick of not being able to hear what they
were doing because of all the young girls screaming at them.
