When I were a lad
We talked to each other
It wasn’t so bad
We didn’t cause much bother

We didn’t have an iPhone
Nor Facebook to chase
And we weren’t alone
We talked face-to-face

We were the generation
With eyes to the sky
Our valued relation-
ship was with ‘you and I’

The internet is useful
I have to agree

but

It can be abuse-full
Eyes down? Not for me!

You don't need Mr Bean any more to walk into a lamp post, the eyes down
generation run into them quite regularly while typing into whatever anti
social media they choose this week.
People tell me they even mount mobiles on the handlebars of bikes now with
earphones blocking their ears, no wonder they run down blind walkers.

This is true! I never move to the side, because the few times a cellphone
walker walks into me it's a great learning opportunity for him! ;)

You have to wonder how come more phones aren't stolen as they have no awareness
of their surroundings.

Well, I would think it is because the average person holds them
constantly, 24x7 in a vice-like grip never taking their eyes off them. ;)

I believe a style / generation of "music" known as "shoe gazing" became
popular in some quarters during the 80s

It required no phone and no internet connection and has the added
attraction of being largely forgotten
