Flashing "intelligent" road studs have been installed at junctions along a busy road in Hull in a bid to improve safety for cyclists and drivers.

The studs, at five junctions along Stoneferry Road, light up to warn drivers when sensors detect a cyclist is approaching, Hull City Council said.

The technology has been installed as part of a multi-million pound scheme of improvements along the road, it added.

Mark Ieronimo, from the council, said it was a key travel route for the city.

Mr Ieronimo, portfolio holder for transportation, roads and highways, said: "Several issues were identified as requiring improvement along the corridor to benefit all members of the travelling public.

"This included the need to enhance safety for cyclists and implement ways to reduce congestion and improve air quality in the area."

Hull City Council said it had worked with a mobility solutions firm to install technology along the Stoneferry Road corridor which was aimed at supporting active travel and cutting congestion.

That included journey time monitoring systems, showing real-time information on 18 displays along the road about traffic flow and alternative routes.

An infrared detection system had also been installed to prevent high vehicles hitting the rail bridge on Stoneferry Road, after the council estimated it was being struck by over-height vehicles six times per year, on average.

Mr Ieronimo said the new technology would make "cycling safer, journey times for motorists and the travelling public much improved, and the damage to vital infrastructure much less likely".

Work on the Stoneferry Road corridor improvements began in 2019 at an initial cost of £8m, though rising costs meant the final bill was over £13m.

Well, the recent video of a cyclist getting squashed by a bright red
monster truck fitted out with dayglo stripes, blue flashing lights, and a
siren loud enough to wake the dead, just goes to show what a pious hope it
is that cyclists will take any notice whatsoever of piddly flashing road
studs.

the side of a vehicle which will be at least the size of a large Transit
type Van more visible to cyclists or pedestrians.

one. The German system is even more hilarious. They don't even record

station, show your reg document, pay 5 euro, and the man issues a
sticker- even hand writing your reg number on with a felt tip pen in
some cases (the one we used was 'posh', he used a Dymo).

Innovative technology has been installed on a major route in the centre of the city, to help improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, as well as help reduce congestion and encourage more people to consider alternative means of travel.

In a UK first, Hull City Council, working with leading highway and transport technological solutions expert, Clearview Intelligence, installed several technologies to support active travel and reduce congestion as part of the major investment to improve the Stoneferry Road corridor, which was completed in November last year.

Among the solutions supplied and installed were ‘intelligent road studs’ at five intersections along the route to help ensure cyclists and motorists look out for each other.

The studs, which are located at the top of each intersection with Stoneferry Road, are connected to a system that detects a cyclist’s approach.. This then activates the studs which illuminate and flash to warn motorists.

Journey time monitoring systems have also been activated along the route to provide motorists with real-time information, displayed on 18 variable message signs, about traffic flows and alternative route details to help avoid congested areas.

The council also estimated that the rail bridge on Stoneferry Road was being struck by over-height vehicles six times per year, on average. In addition to significant costs for vehicle removal and repairs, such incidents caused disruption to motorists and the travelling public and the rail network.

Using infrared sensors, an over-height vehicle detection system has been installed to warn heavy goods vehicle drivers of the low bridge on Stoneferry Road and advise them of other routes available in order to avoid bridge strikes.

The question about the barmy Hull scheme is that it doesn’t warn cyclists
of approaching motor vehicles!

Talk about putting the cart before the horse.

Thanks for the info on Angle Mort and the Crit Air schemes - both seem to
be a ‘seen to be doing something’ response to a an issue of little moment.

What is really needed is training for cyclists, they seem to be ignorant of
many aspects of road craft.

Hull are proposing to install "intelligent road studs" that will "detect cyclists approaching".

So drivers in Hull are ... thicker than f*cking road studs?

[Some of my riding experiences of Hull suggests some of the drivers are thicker than the ordinary road studs ... but that's another story.]
