A teenager has been arrested by police on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent following an incident on a Plymouth street which left a 74-year-old man in hospital suffering serious injuries.

Devon and Cornwall Police were searching for two young men who were on a motor-scooter which collided with cyclist Alan Qualtrough, the former newspaper journalist who went on to become the editor of The Herald in 2001 and then the Western Morning News in 2005 to 2012.

Mr Qualtrough, who is now an artists and works with Real Ideas on the Real Art Make Print project at Ocean Studios, in the Royal William Yard, was left suffering injuries which needed emergency treatment and a number of days stay in Derriford Hospital.

Police have now said they have identified one of the people they wanted to speak to in connection with an incident which took place on Mount Gould Road, Plymouth on Monday September 4. The force issued a photo appeal on September 7, showing a rider and pillion passenger on what appeared to be a Honda PCX 125 moped.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Enquiries are ongoing to identify the second individual. Officers would like to thank members of the public for their support.

"A 17-year-old male from Exeter has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He has been released on bail, pending further enquiries, to return on Saturday 2 December."
