A dangerous driver who used cloned plates to try to evade police has been jailed.

Richard Liam Rodgerson was spotted driving an Audi A3 on the afternoon of November 10 and refused to stop for officers on the A1 at Junction 61.

The car was stung and then pursued through Coxhoe Village where he continued to drive dangerously and crashed into a parked car.

When he realised he could go no further with flat tyres, the 37-year-old attempted to flee but was detained by officers who chased him down on foot.

Rodgerson turned out to be a prolific disqualified driver and was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving, having no insurance and disqualified driving.

And at Durham Crown Court yesterday (December 14), Rodgerson, of West Street, Seaham, was sentenced to 16 months in prison as well as being banned from driving for two years and eight months.

Not many villages are subject to a limit higher than 30 and/or don't

If your head hasn’t been buried deep in the Highway Code recently, it’s worth the reminder that all vehicles must display parking lights – sidelights – when parked on a road (or lay-by) with a speed limit over 30mph.

If the road has a speed limit of 30mph or less, you don’t need to leave on your sidelights, as long as:

your spot is a recognised parking bay or lay-by, or
you’re facing in the direction of the traffic flow, close to the kerb, and at least 10 metres from the nearest junction

Of course, as always, make sure you’re complying with any local parking restrictions, as instructed on the roadside.

Sidelights must also be switched on if your vehicle, for unavoidable reasons, is parked on any road in fog.

If a road operates a speed limit greater than 30mph, under The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 you’re legally required to leave on your sidelights when parking on it at night.

The best thing to do is to avoid parking on these roads altogether, finding an alternative spot where possible.

If you must, park on the left-hand side of the road (i.e. facing the direction of traffic flow) and leave on your sidelights for the duration of your stay.

Parking at night on the right-hand side of the road is never allowed, except on a one-way-street.

- cycling through pedestrians on a crossing

Did you manage to get very far on the rims of your Saab with the
non-functioning windscreen wipers? After all, if you're not prepared to
pay out for a new wiper motor, you aren't likely to be willing to shell
out the readies for a new set of tyres.
