A LORRY driver was handed a fine and points on his licence after he was caught going 13mph over the speed limit.

A silver tanker lorry was seen driving through Winterborne Whitechurch on Monday, October 9, at 43mph in a 30mph road.

The Dorset Police No Excuse team were on hand following complaints regarding speeding and stopped the HGV before giving the driver a fixed penalty notice for £100 and three points on his licence.

Police say the vehicle also had a defective brake light.

A No Excuses spokesman said: “Where possible we try to offer education to drivers committing speeding offences, but due to the speed detected on this occasion the only option available was a fixed penalty notice or a court appearance.

“We would like to thank the majority of drivers who were travelling through Winterbourne Whitechurch at the correct speed.

“The higher the speed a vehicle travels, the greater the likelihood of serious injury or death if there is a crash. The risk of injury increases exponentially with impact speed.”

Police are urging people to report speeding drivers to them, saying speed enforcement is “intelligence led”, meaning officers attend locations where people complain the most.
