The locations that Cleveland Police has targeted drivers during their Christmas drink and drug driving campaign have been revealed.

As part of the ongoing campaign, officers are carrying out drink and drug drive testing across the Teesside area in order to raise awareness of the serious consequences of driving whilst under the influence. On Monday, December 11, 180 tests were carried out near Newport Bridge and Borough Road.

Two drivers warned, two arrested and other offences such as children not wearing seatbelts identified. A 69-year-old man was charged with drink driving and is due to appear at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, January 4.

On Tuesday, December 12, 190 tests were carried out across Hartlepool and Middlesbrough with only one driver found to be intoxicated, however, not over the legal limit. A Mitsubishi Colt was proactively stopped on Union Street and a 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. He was later bailed whilst enquiries continue.

On Wednesday, December 13, 100 motorists were stopped on the Trunk Road, in Redcar, where one person was reportedly found to be over the drink drive limit and was charged. A 37-year-old man from the Redcar area was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and is due to appear in court on Friday, January 5.

A 24-year-old man was additionally charged with drink driving after a vehicle reportedly crashed into a wall in the early hours of Wednesday in Middlesbrough. The man is due to appear in court on Friday, January 5

On Thursday, January 14, 178 tests were carried out on Trunk Road, Redcar and no drivers were found to be under the influence. However, in the early hours of Thursday, a vehicle stopped by police on Fosdyke Green was seized after it was found to have no insurance.

The driver, a 39-year-old man, was found to be under the influence of drugs and was arrested and later bailed whilst enquiries continue.

A force spokesperson said: “The campaign continues throughout December and into January, in order to help keep people on our roads as safe as possible. If you’re going out this weekend, make sure that you arrange a lift or get a taxi – don’t get behind the wheel whilst under the influence. Don’t take the risk.

“Anyone who wishes to make a report regarding suspected drink or drug driving can contact Cleveland Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
