Ahead of Christmas, eighteen drivers have received a total of 67 points on their licences after Extra Eyes received dash cam footage capturing driving offences from the public. One of the highest penalties issued by the court involved the driver of a van who, in June, crossed all three lanes of the M25 at Brentwood to reach a slip road, causing the driver of another vehicle to brake sharply to avoid a collision. The driver was issued six penalty points, but because of “totting”, was disqualified for six months. He was also fined over £300 and ordered to pay costs.
One driver was sentenced to three penalty points after they failed to adhere to a no right turn as they exited a retail unit on Colchester Road, Chelmsford in July, forcing them to drive towards oncoming traffic. They were also fined £220 and costs.
One of the most serious incidents of driving without due care and attention involved a driver who drove through an M25 roadblock on the Epping stretch in August. A marked highways car activated emergency lights whilst putting a rolling roadblock in place due to a breakdown in lane 4. Despite their rear lights and the matrix board in the vehicle’s rear window indicating the road closure, the driver drove past the highways’ vehicle and through the roadblock resulting in the driver being issued over £600 fines and costs and six penalty points.
A driver admitted driving without due care and attention when they attempted to drive past a School Crossing Patrol Officer who was still in the road. The incident occurred in July in Braintree: the driver had their licence endorsed with three penalty points and fined.
