A 22-year-old man has been jailed for 10 years for causing death by dangerous driving in Oldham.

At around 11.30pm on Saturday, October 15, 2022, officers were called to reports of a serious collision between a vehicle and pedestrian on Oldham Road.

Earlier that day, officers out on patrol came across a black Audi A1 that was driving in an erratic manner.

The officers attempted to pull over the vehicle, but the driver of the Audi made off leading to a short pursuit, which was discontinued after the officers lost sight of the vehicle due to Nathan Quinn’s excessive and dangerous speed.

A short time later the Audi hit an Automatic Number Place Recognition (ANPR) camera which alerted officers to the location and direction in which the vehicle was travelling.

It was established that the vehicle was being driven at more than double of the listed 30mph speed limit in that area.

Whilst travelling along Oldham Road, the Audi contravened a red light and collided with a pedestrian that was crossing the road at the designated pedestrian crossing at the time.

Upon attending the scene, emergency services located the pedestrian - a 37-year-old man - who was in critical condition following the incident.

Witnesses at the scene told officers that the vehicle involved in the collision had failed to stop and continued to drive towards Oldham’s town centre.

Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the pedestrian sadly died in hospital as a result of his injuries a short time later.

The driver of the Audi A1 was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop and being unfit to drive through drink or drugs.

Today (Wednesday), Quinn (aged 22) of Healds Green in Oldham, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

Quinn was also issued with a further disqualification from driving for four years to commence when released from prison.

Detective Constable Liam Carolan, from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This case is a tragic incident where a husband and father of two young children has lost his life due to the idiocy of Nathan Quinn.

“Mr Quinn thought he was untouchable and it has ultimately cost the life of a 37-year-old man who was simply crossing the road.

"Not only did he not stop when approached by the police, he continue to travel at speeds more than double the signposted speed limits in that area while under the influence of alcohol.

“The victim’s family have had to wait more than a year for this case to reach trail, and I am glad that we have played a part in bringing the killer of their loved one to justice.”

Running a red light and killing a man on a zebra = TEN YEARS IN JAIL?
What about a driving ban too?

Are prisoners allowed to drive around the jail?
