A cyclist has died following a collision in Newport. Police and paramedics were called to the A48 Southern Distributor Road on Boxing Day following a road traffic collision and later confirmed the collision involved a bike and a car.

A statement from the Force Incident Manager at Gwent Police explained: "We received a report of a road traffic collision on the A48 Southern Distributor Road at around 5.20pm on Tuesday, December 26. Officers attended along with personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service and the collision involved a push-bike and a car. The cyclist was taken to hospital for treatment."

Previously, an initial statement from Gwent Police said: "Road closed: the A48 is currently closed between LG roundabout (by Blacksmiths Way) and the Marshfield Road junction. Diversions are in place which may cause congestion. Please avoid the area if possible and find alternative routes for your journey. Thank you."

South Wales Police added: "Road Closure: We are at the scene of a serious collision on the A48 between Blooms and Cleppa Park. The road is currently closed in both directions between the garden centre, Blooms, and the LG roundabout. It is expected to remain closed [for quite some time]. Motorists are advised to avoid the area."

The cyclist, who was a 51-year-old man from the Cardiff area, was taken to hospital to receive treatment but he later died. In a statement issued on Wednesday, December 27, Gwent Police confirmed that the driver of the Mini Cooper car - a 74-year-old woman also from the Cardiff area, had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She remains in police custody and is being questioned, the force said.

The police force are now appealing for anyone who may have dashcam footage or information of the incident to get in contact with them. You can find out more about the appeal here.

The road had been closed for some time. At around 6.36am on Wednesday morning, December 27, the A48 road remained closed in both directions due to accident investigation work between Blacksmiths Way in Duffryn and Mill Lane in Castleton. The work had been ongoing since around 6.20pm on Tuesday, December 26, according to traffic monitoring service, Inrix. However, at around 7.54am later in the morning, Inrix confirmed that the accident investigation work had now been cleared and that traffic was easing.
