A cyclist has died after a crash in Newport. Police have arrested an 83-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said the force received a report of a collision in Caerleon Road at around 4.20pm on Monday, New Year's Day. “Officers attended, along with personnel from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and the collision involved a car and a push-bike," they added. "The cyclist, a 61-year-old man from Newport, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“His next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers. The driver, an 83-year-old man from Newport, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody.”
