A drink driver has been jailed after being caught twice in six months.

Police were on patrol in Cambridge at around 11am on 27 January when they pulled over a silver Mercedes C220 in Glenmere Close.

The driver, Stefan Hreniuc, admitted to drinking ‘100mls of vodka’ that morning and blew 111ug at the roadside, more than three times the legal limit of 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath. He went on to give an evidential reading of 75 in custody.

In September Hreniuc, 39, of Fen Road, Cambridge, was given a four-month suspended sentence and disqualified from driving for 25 months after also being caught more than three times the limit (111ug) in July.

At Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday (29 January), Hreniuc was jailed for four months and four weeks after pleading guilty to driving while disqualified, drink driving and using a passenger vehicle with tyres with insufficient tread.

He was also disqualified from driving for three years and three months.

PC Andy Holliday, who investigated, said: “Hreniuc has shown total disregard for the sentences imposed on him by the courts and continued to put himself and other road users in danger.

“The sentence reflects the seriousness of Hreniuc’s actions..”

The force operates a dedicated, confidential hotline, 0800 032 0845, which is available 24/7 and provides the public with the chance to provide information about anyone they think may be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

A driver who crashed her Audi into a ditch while drunk was caught again four times over the limit just six months later.

Nicola Giles, 47, was still under investigation for suspected drink driving over an accident (sic) that saw her drive off the road when she was found slumped behind the wheel with two bottles of white wine.

Norwich Magistrates’ Court was told police had been called on May 22 to an accident involving an Audi A3 on the West Harling Road, between East Harling and Thetford.

Colette Harper, prosecuting, said Giles had been found in a confused and intoxicated state nearby and had admitted being drunk.

After she failed a roadside breath test a subsequent blood sample had recorded an alcohol level of 270mg- over three times the legal limit of 80.

Colette Harper, prosecuting, said she had been arrested again on November 11 after a concerned member of the public had called police over a woman in a Ford Fiesta parked on London Road in Wymondham.

She had been found asleep in the driving seat with the keys in the ignition with bottles of wine, said Ms Harper.

A breath test had seen her blow 147mg (sic) - more than four times over the legal limit of 35.

Giles, of Bryony Way in Attleborough, pleaded guilty to drink driving and being in charge of a motor vehicle while over the limit.

Appearing in court unrepresented, she told magistrates she was guilty but that she had nothing to add to the contents of a pre-sentence report prepared by the probation service.

Banning her from driving for a total of two years and three months, the magistrates told her: “This is a serious situation, very fortunately no-one else was injured except yourself.”

She was made subject of an 18 month community order including 15 rehabilitation days and told to pay fines and costs of £514.

What sort of chav-bike is she now riding?

A former West Yorkshire Police officer had been drink-driving when she crashed her car with a three-year-old child inside, a misconduct hearing has heard.

PC Abigail Pigram was more than twice over the legal limit when the crash took place in Keighley in August 2022.

The panel was told she was later convicted of drink-driving and given a 12-month driving ban.

It found her guilty of gross misconduct and said she would have been sacked had she not already resigned.

The former officer offered no evidence and did not attend the hearing in Wakefield.

The panel was told the car had come off the road on Vale Mill Lane, slid down an embankment and hit a fence ending up on its side.

A member of the public reported the incident, which took place at about 18:00 BST on 16 August 2022, after Ms Pigram had left the scene with the child..

She then returned in another vehicle and tried to persuade two colleagues investigating the crash not to take it any further.

Ms Pigram was arrested after being found to be more than twice the drink-driving limit.

The independent panel heard she was later convicted of driving while under the influence and banned from driving for a year and fined £200.

Her claim that she had drunk alcohol after the crash, a so-called hip flask defence, was dismissed by magistrates, the panel was told.
'Hypocrisy'

Ms Pigram's actions meant she had breached the force's professional standards of behaviour and were found to constitute gross misconduct.

Callum Cowx, who chaired the misconduct hearing, said: "It (drink-driving) has been socially unacceptable for decades and for an off-duty officer to do so, with a three-year-old child in the vehicle, smacks of hypocrisy.

"We therefore decided that the only outcome that could be imposed was dismissal without notice, if the officer was still serving, and the same officer will be placed on the police barring list."

Det Ch Supt Nicola Bryar, from West Yorkshire Police, said: "As an organisation, we can provide support for employees who recognise that they have an issue with alcohol.

"Unfortunately, this former officer has not asked for help and whilst off duty, has driven while under the influence and has been involved in a collision. "
