People here often complain about background effects and music hiding
dialogue. Well on a podcast I heard a snippet of, a sound and video engineer
was asked about the greater use of these in films and TV, and he said, why
do we use it? Well because we can now have many tracks on tap and mixable at
any point in a scene, and we use them all to make a richer experience for
the viewer.
It had obviously passed him by that for some, richer experience really
means more background noise to hear the dialogue through.
I guess its probably true that if you present an engineer with more
configurations, he or she will want to use them all!

Brian

Exactly, just as, in shots of wild landscapes, they overdub buzzard
calls, even though the video, if it's even showing a bird of prey at
all, may be showing an entirely different one

In such situations, the famous Monty Python sketch ...
"The ball was there, so I kicked it in the net, Brian!"
.... translates to ...
"The button is there, so I keep pressing it, Brian!"

I should have added a classic example of similar stupidity that occurred
in the recent series Iolo's Borderlands, about 2 and a half minutes into
the first episode. Iolo was standing in a Nature Reserve listening to
birdsong saying: "You can hear all kinds of birds", but, in fact, when I
first watched it I could hear SFA, because the soundtrack was so
piss-poorly mixed that to hear his voice at a level that wasn't
deafening, the birdsong was too quiet even to be audible, let alone
discernible! Listening to it now on a decent stereo is certainly
better, but the birdsong is still too quiet compared with his voice.
