Another problem with new PC - I keep getting a message saying the
monitor is out of range (when starting up). However, I have checked
the settings in the control panel and they are the same as the
recommended settings (1920x1080, 60 Hz). Any ideas?

Sounds like a driver issue to me.
However as I never use a monitor fro obvious reasons, who knows. I'm told
but have not tried, but windows 11 apparently requires a monitor to be
plugged in, which sounds a bit pointless to me.

Thanks. I looked and there is no driver update for the display
adapter. The resolution settings are the same as shown on the
monitor, yet I get an 'out of range' error message every time.

But does the monitor work? Perhaps the PC thinks it should be 50Hz for
the UK?

I'm avoiding Windows 11 and will be actively preventing my Windows 10
laptop ever updating itself to Windows 11. When I've used it, I've only
ever been borrowing someone else's PC, so I've never had chance to
"play" to the extent of seeing what happens if you boot up a PC without
a monitor connected.

I remember when I first got a Raspberry Pi, I tried to boot it without a
monitor connected to its HDMI port, on the grounds that I would be using
it "headless" (no monitor, keyboard or mouse) and accessing it by VNC.
And it hung during booting. But there is a setting that can be tweaked
to tell it to ignore the no-monitor "error" and to carry on booting.

Maybe there is something similar for Windows 11.

It's a BIOS setting, ignore keyboard and monitor errors - different
wording on different machines and sometimes they are combined and
sometimes separate.

What are you going to do when they stop supporting Windows 10 in a

How is the monitor connected? Hdmi or the old 9pin D connection?
I hate HDMI, personally.

Using Pi OS 32bit Lite, I frequently boot a Pi without a monitor,
actually I've not connected a monitor to a Pi in a very long time I
just use SSH and SMB. No problem at all doing this and no settings to
tweak either. Maybe the situation has changed or you were using a
different OS.

Don't know, but I keep on Windows 7 and older software for much the same
reason. Too many unknowns when you update. Since the current release of win
10 is the last and supported till 2025, then you won't have long to wait
till its obsolete. I'm fairly certain there are a whole hidden lot ofpeople
out there still using older windows and programs, and with the fact that
many routers now have a lot of malicious persons catcher software, it is
actually far cheaper to carry on and be pretty safe as well.
However, the Monitor ourt of range I used to get when I could see actually
came from Bios, and it had to be reflashed from an update to make it work.
This meant going on line and grabbing a download file, then running it which
shut down the machine and rebooted it with the new version. However, the
snag was I had to borrow a monitor to get it to work, and then set up the
new bios on the monitor. I have to say right here that this was a build it
yourself machine and hence there was no real surprise when everything did
not default to something sensible.

This was way back when Windows 7 firs came out and we were mostly used to
XP, which apart from being a bit slow, is, in my opinion a much cleaner
operating system, its just that most software no longer will support it.

Yes, it does work if I change it to another setting (DVI) then back to
HDMI. The monitor is 60 HZ as is the PC setting.

Hopefully by then there will be Windows 12 which (like Win 8.1 or Win 10
compared with Win 8.0) has had some of the weird user-interface tamed,
making it more like Windows 7 and earlier. I still have nightmares about
trying to use Win 8.0 with its "random mess of monochrome tiles" Start menu,
where the app icons are not their normal multiple colours that you are used
to, and where the position and order of them changes day by day. And you had
to jump through hoops to copy a shortcut for an app from the Start menu to
place it on the desktop - I think Microsoft wanted you to navigate through
the Start menu tree every time you wanted to start a commonly-used app.

I've not tried ClassicShell (or similar 3rd-party tools) with Windows 11. I
presume, as for Win 8 and 10, it restores a normal Windows XP or 7 Start
menu, and I presume there are ways with Win 11 (as with Win 10) of adding
the quick-launch toolbar so you can separate the icons for starting your
commonly-used apps from the icons that denote running apps. The default of
Window 8 and higher is to combine these two separate uses of application
icons, so the same icon on the taskbar is used both for starting an app and
(with the addition of an underscore) for depicting a running app, which
makes it difficult to start an additional instance instead of just bringing
the existing instance to the foreground. (*)

I suppose I'm a Luddite: no matter what improvements are made to the "engine
and transmission" of my PC, I want the "pedals and steering wheel" to remain
in roughly the same place and order as they were when I started using PCs in
the 1980s.

My laptop had the dreaded message "Windows 11 is now available" last night,
with the option "Remain on Windows 10 for the time being" message which
suggests that sooner or later I'll get force-fed with Windows 11. I wish I
coudl find a setting in Win 10 to say "keep receiving updates to Win 10, but
under no circumstances upgrade to Win 11". Maybe there is something in my
laptop's ACPI (effectively the BIOS) which turns off the hardware device
that Win 11 needs, thus disabling update.

(*) There are some things that I change on any new PC that I will be using:

- turn off the "tapping" feature of a laptop's mouse touchpad so an
over-exuberant flick of the finger, when making multiple passes to move the
cursor from one side of the screen to the other, doesn't mis-register as a
left-click of the mouse

- turn off the dreaded "hide taskbar" which makes the taskbar disappear
after a few seconds, giving you a bit more scree space for a full-screen
app, but at the expense of hiding the clock and requiring you to move the
mouse to the bottom and wait for hte taskbar to reappear

(My wife curses me for those two changes when she has to use my laptop)

- install Classic Shell to give a Win XP/7 Start menu

- enable the Quick Launch toolbar on the taskbar

- turn off the behaviour that combines multiple instances of an app into a
single taskbar icon, which requires you to linger over the icon until it
pops up thumbnails of the multiple instances so you can select the one you
want

- turn off Cortana (which offends my OCD tendencies which see it as
"mis-spelled Cortina" ;-)

With my older Pi 3B+, it just worked. When I bought a Pi 4, it refused to
boot without a monitor connected, and I learned of the config setting to
allow no-monitor booting. In both cases, using Raspbian / Raspberry PiOS. My
two Pis are headless and I use VNC to drive the Pi and SMB to access files
on its system disk (SD card) or external spinning disk (for recording TV
programmes and storing other very large files that would fill the 32 GB SD
card and would soon knacker it with frequent deletes and writes.

The other problem with the Pi 4 was that it didn't like the powered USB hub
that I'd been using to supply power to a USB hard drive, to avoid drawing
too much current from the Pi's own USB port, causing it to overheat. If I
booted the Pi without the hub powered up, and then powered up the hub
immediately after booting had started, everything was fine. But if
everything was powered on at the same instance (eg when power is restored
after a power cut) then booting hangs until the hub is powered off or
disconnected. That needed a change to a powered hard drive (as opposed to a
USB-powered one and a powered hub).
