Why did the BBC spend lots of money revamping the Reporting Scotland
studio: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-scotland-65856469

Could they not have used a small plain room and added a virtual studio
using computer generated graphics?

Why do they need vast amounts of floor space? It should be only someone
sitting behind a desk reading an Autocue and introducing the feed from
someone standing out in the rain giving the same information as
previously been read from the Autocue :)

The big mistake the BBC adopted was to show the army of journalists in
the back office and how little real news they produced for the news
slots on their main channels - just proving to the public the massive
overmanning.

Did you see the tour around the new studio that they had earlier in the
week.

A "virtual" studio uses screens around the room which is what they have
as well as the 'tower'.

It is probably best to have some standardisation of news studios in the
regions to keep costs down and make it easier to move staff around.

I'd have thought a truly "virtual" studio would be CGI'd without the
need for any screens on walls?

That's not how the BBC have used the term in the past - e.g. for their
Tokyo Olympics.

It’s probably quite difficult for the presenters if everything is CGI and
they can’t see it. The weather presenters have a hard enough time with
their virtual displays.

For a dramatic illustration of BBC extravagance, have a look on
Youtube for 'Ogmios school of zen motoring', and then seek out the
programmes he made with BBC3. See if you can even count the names that
whizz up the screen at the end, never mind read any of them. Ask
yourself what you have seen in these BBC programmes that sets them
apart from the Youtube videos made by one man driving around and
talking *all by himself*.

BBC Scotland certainly have a surprising number of news presenters on
the payroll.

Do you mean the online version or was there a tour at PQ? I couldn't
tell looking at the online version what was structural and want was
electronic.

I remember some possibly apocryphal tale about a senior executive at
ITN demanding a health and safety assessment of a glass screen in the
studio, only to be told there was no glass screen and it was part of
the graphics.

Yes well, I guess we could have done with your health and safety bloke at a
local NHS building, where to stop draftee auto doors from freezing
reception, one day a glass screen was erected just inside the door with a
way around it at one end. It had the desired effect, except that for the
first week everyone walked into it as it just had a blue stripe at the
bottom.
Us blindies were constantly running into it the other way doing a mime
artist impression to find our way out, It was soon taken away in favour of a
second set of automatic doors.

Presenters or reporters?

They have three TV stations to service and two radio stations. If
someone goes out to do a report on something, it can often take all day
because of the distances involved. But I have no idea how many they
have and suspect they do other things between bulletins.

Just imagine the fuss from the SNP if when Useless resigns, there was no
one to report it on BBC Scotland!

All of the BBC regions and nations are adopting the same news set, it's
based upon the national news one that's been in use for a year (Without
the cameras running on tram lines !)

I guess the advantage of screens is that the presenters can see them in
much the same way as the audience. e.g. don't need to appear wearing a
VR headset if they need to see what they are 'walking towards'.
