Just listening to Radio 4 before 18:00h and they were able to announce
almost immediately that Huw Edwards has been named. But BBC News
channel had the weather running so could not announce it and then went
into a few minutes of trailers etc before the 1800h news when it was the
lead item.

Years ago it would have just gone up on teletext immediately.

Well true, but the word of mouth leaked out of the BBC buildings days ago.
Even the Times Radio presenters knew who it was days ago.

I am sure that is true of many cases. Every time there is an arrest by
the police, many people know who has been arrested long before any names
are released.

I would expect news teams from the various companies would have access
to privileged and strictly embargoed information from the beginning.

But it is worrying and disappointing that his name leaked to the general
public and was mentioned on social media, and that it did so with
sufficient certainty that before long no other names were being mentioned.

The only other names I saw were just the names of people who had
decided to deny it. All the hints (and some of them not too subtle)
about the name of 'the one' were about the same person.

There was nothing embargoed about, it's simply that BBC staff talk to
their counterparts in the press and other broadcasters, bump into each
other at news venues, exchange gossip on Whatsapp etc etc. Word soon
gets round, and will leak out.
