I cancelled my Sky subscription nearly 2 years ago. I still get texts from
them asking me to go back and when I try to send a "STOP" message I get a
warning it will cost me - doesn't say how much.

How do shake these people off and why would I be charged foe a text
message (I have unlimited texts)?

If the "please come back" messages come from a short code, rather than
an 07 number, they're excluded fro your bundle, so I think they're
around 15p each (standard rate, may vary per supplier)

Because much like the BBC these numbers are not in the plan, so get charged
for. That is why these days the bbc offers a Whatsapp feed for talking to
their presenters as its free.

Only to UK mobiles (and EU if with O2).

$ky SMC may have improved, but it used to take a recorded delivery letter to get them to stop taking their DD.

OFCOM rules say texting STOP to a short code must be free.
So do it and if it isn't free you can complain to OFCOM.

From what I've managed to find that seems to be wrong. Short coded seem to
be treated as premium rate. I am happy to be wrong about this...

Ofcom have a short code number (7726) where you can report unwanted spam
texts, that is free.

Well when I texted the short bbc code then they took 15p every time.
However as I say, Whatsapp is free.

One way that can work on some phones is that you can block texts from
certain numbers, or maybe if you still have a password for the sky site, go
into their preferences and turn off all you can about please keep me
informed. Often they force one thing on you, so make it email and block
their sending address in the filters of your email client or webmail. Brian

AIUI the OP successfully ceased his Sky account a while ago, it's
promotional material to lure him back that he's trying to cease.

By the way, typing $ky instead of Sky was moderately amusing 25 years
ago seeing it for the first time, but I tire of  it now

same.
when they were the only choice in subscription tv you could let it go,
now it's all a bit sad, i mean, how dare a private company attempt to
turn a profit.

They pass the file to bailiffs, then you end up arguing with them and possible red marks on your credit rating...

I had a row like this with Spark Energy [or rather their insolvency practitioners KPMG]. Spark appointed administrators before switch over, so I notified my bank and they exercised the direct debit guarantee. OFGEM made arrangements with OVO and a phoenix company Spark Energy Supply took over, but not before a week's supply had been provided by Spark. The first I knew of the unpaid small [but inflated due to their losing final readings] bill was a phone call from bailiffs in Glasgow on a Saturday morning six months later. A full threat display* by email and an offer of a [fair] reduced amount seemed to put them off - they never agreed to accept the lower amount, but I never heard anything further.

* Transfer the case to England, pay the undisputed amount into court, defend the rest, counterclaim, and [exceptionally] seek costs due to their intransigence.

Even when they were the only choice you did not have to subscribe.

Nothing wrong with them turning a profit, but continuing to take direct debits after the cancellation notice period despite repeated phone calls and emails to stop, that profiteering [and wrong].

They were the pits, but currently BT seem to have about the worst CS of anyone.

Getting through to a human at BT CS can be the first problem, followed
by idiots repeatedly transferring customers to the wrong department.

Surely the OP could just block Sky in his mail client - assuming he uses
one of course. Thunderbird is very effective at it!

It's spam by SMS. I have managed to contact them by email and they are
currently scratching their heads because the landline 'phone number they
have is disconnected (I have moved) and my account was closed two years
ago so identifying me is fun.

My main landline phone number was ported from BT to Voipfone over 15 years ago after BT dropped it on the floor in a compelled migration from Highway to ADSL.

Amusingly if someone texts that number I get a voice message from BT on the Voipfone number, telling me what it was! As it happens AIUI Voipfone can receive SMS .
