Anybody have any experience of Qviart? For example:
<https://www.amazon.co.uk/Qviart-Receiver-Timeshift-Recorder-Television/dp/B08PG2CKWP/ref=sr_1_69?keywords=pvr+recorder&qid=1692602737&sr=8-69>
Almost nothing is available in English - even the reviews had to be
translated.
(Note that the manual for this doesn't exist on the Qviart manuals
download webpage)

Even the other multilanguage manuals on the Qviart website have little
useful information. This is their latest satellite/terrestrial combo
receiver, but note it's a 120MB pdf download!:
<https://qviart.com/download/317/>
There is a "Help" button on the remote which would appear to go to the
guide for using the device, but I assume it's built-in to the device,
and is not available for download.

I was hoping someone here could explain! :-)

It may be that it's meant to be T2 + (DVB-T2 H265/H.264) rather than
T2+..., but that doesn't help. Looking at their "Firmwares"(sic)
download page, if you click on T2 + (with the space) it offers to
download Qviart.T2-1.00.bin, so no T2+ there.

Does it have a built in voice? If it does it might give one a clue as to its
origin. I well remember a company selling talking dumb mobiles with speech
and oxometers, the problem was every few days or when you had to turn them
off they reverted to something like Chinese, you you needed to know the
Chinese for English.

No idea, although the "about us" page states "we are a multicultural
team located in Spain, Europe and Asia". When an internal link on one of
their webpages pointed to a non-existent download, the "The download
does not exist" pop-up was in Spanish!

As I said, their downloadable "manual" has very little information.

Something slightly more expensive
https://www.world-of-satellite.co.uk/satellite-and-terrestrial/digital-receivers/zgemma/zgemma-h82h
One satellite tuner and one T2 tuner.
It can run the Openvix (third party open source and free) software

there is a user forum at

Thanks for the links, but although it mentions T2 the Zgemma seems to
concentrate on satellite which isn't surprising considering that the
page is at the world-of-satellite website! There appears to be a manual
included in the pack, but I couldn't find a downloadable one at the
W-O-S website.

I downloaded the VIX manual but it doesn't cover terrestrial
installation or functionality at all - the single mention is in relation
to the EPG). The world-of-satellite forum is of no use unfortunately as
you have to register to access it, and only the forum "front page" seems
available. I tried to search on Zgemma but received a pop-up that I do
not have permission to access the page.

I wonder why the manuals for these devices seem to be unavailable to
view. It would save a lot of time if it was possible to see whether or
not they were usable with a quick look.

Whenever I'm weighing up the pros and cons of technological devices, I
try to download the user manual to see what the device is *really*
capable of, shorn of any marketing hype and half-truths. I imagine I'm
not the only one to so that.

Openvix has full support for UK Freeview. Openvix is open source and
written by hobbyists. It is well maintained, and has been for the 9
years I've been using it.

I have an enigma2 box running openvix. My box has two terrestrial tuners
and two satellite tuners. I have an over the air 7 day epg for Freeview
and also a 7 day epg for Freesat. I can use all 4 tuners at the same time.

All the features shown in the Openvix web pages are, in general , the
same for satellite and terrestrial. I note some links are broken - I
will report that in the forum(s)

The differences are just the tuner selection and the UK broadcast source
freeview/freesat/sky FTA (the latter just gives a few more free to air
channels you can get from sky)

For terrestrial you go to the tuner page where you will find the T2
tuner listed. It is usually a hybrid DVBt/DVBc device so you just select
T. Set the region to all regions - United Kingdom,Europe DVB T/T2.

Tuning for channels is performed from a menu feature called
AutoBouquetMaker when you enable from the list Freeview UK and select
the region, which is the name of your transmitter.

The only other difference is in the EPG settings where you would select
enable EIT EPG to get the over the air 7 day freeview EPG.

To get some of the above setting options you will need a
network/internet connection to the box.

- the single mention is in relation
> to the EPG). The world-of-satellite forum is of no use unfortunately as
> you have to register to access it,

Yes you have to register and it is a moderated forum (mainly to prevent
spam). Registration may not be instantaneous. The moderators are in
general the main people writing/maintaining the software and some of the
alpha/beta testers.

The manuals are more suited`to the specification of the box as most
people using these linux based enigma 2 box are probably using third
party images (software) that provide a LOT more functionality than
provided by te manufacturer.

These boxes are NOT branded Freeview or Freesat boxes and are aimed at
the international market. It's the uk support in software such as
Openvix that makes them, with a couple of menu options, near foolproof
Freview/Freesat boxes. There is a learning curve associated with
setting up these boxes and to understand some of the unique terminology
used.

BTW, I see that the Qviart is also a Enigma 2 box but not supported by
the openvix team. Each box has its own build. In general older boxes and
poorly specified boxes are not supported. Most manufactures, even at the
low price end of the market, have boxes that support 4k (as well as HD
and Sd)

Same here. Sales people in shops rarely have much knowledge about what
they're selling. All you can do is find out as much as you can
yourself.

In the days before the Internet salesmen in shops like Dixons were a

In the 1960s, radio shops were often run by actual electronic
engineers, maybe having been trained during the war, or maybe just
clever people with an interest in the subject. There were two of these
shops near where I lived, and I recall getting advice from the chap
who ran one of them about how to fix and align the first superhet
receiver I'd built because it didn't work properly at first. Imagine
finding anyone in a shop today who even knew what that meant.

You are correct - its just that the internet has allowed people with a
clue to gain the information much easier. However, you still have
people like Russ Andrews selling expensive snake oil to people who must
have read glowing reviews on the Net :)

Thanks for the extensive information. It looks like something I might
take an interest in later on, but not at present. It's disappointing
that the forum prevents someone just viewing information without
registering.

I run TVHeadend on a Raspberry Pi as my PVR. It has a DVB-S2 tuner and a
dual-tuner DVB-T2 tuner, so I can record from three muxes at once.

Configuring TVH is easy if you have just one network (ie just
terrestrial or just satellite). The automatic process for handling
multiple networks with duplicate channels is not too clever, thought a
lot of the problem comes from the fact that for some bizarre reason
channels have different names on sat and terr (eg "BBC FOUR" versus "BBC
Four") and so get treated as different instead of being properly merged.

So I decided to start again, not do *any* automatic merging of channels,
and to do the manual merging of BBC FOUR with BBC Four etc for the
channels that I watch.

I also spent a while looking at SIDs to work out which version of "ITV"
was which region, and saving them as "ITV Yorkshire (West)", "ITV
London" etc, so I can watch/record the local news for any area if there
is a story that hits the national news but which might be covered in
more detail on the regional news.

I get full 7-day listings for all satellite and terrestrial channels -
as far as I know, the info is over-the-air and not from any internet
source. I now set TVH to update the EPG *twice* a day, to catch any
late-breaking changes. I started that at the time of the Queen's death,
when not only were scheduled programmes replaced by Queen-themed ones
(which is fair enough, I suppose) but also the scheduled replacement
programmes about the Queen weren't even as published on Digiguide or the
OTA listings grabbed in the early hours of the morning.

The only thing that TVH doesn't do well is to warn you *in advance* of
clashes "You will not have enough tuners to record these overlapping
programmes". The only time you find out is when it tries to start a
recording and finds that it has no free tuners. Not being able to look
ahead and warn you while there is still time to say "in that case, maybe
I can manage without recording programme X, so I'll unschedule it" -
that is a nasty error. When I asked on their forum, I got a very weak
excuse about how it was logically impossible to do in certain rare
situations, so they weren't even going to do it even in the vast
majority of situation where it *is* logically possible. Weak excuse.

But apart from that, TVH is a great program. I'll have to try openvix
for comparison. I used to use NextPVR on Windows, but at the time I got
my RasPi, there wasn't a version for Pi (or Linux in general) whereas
now apparently there is - again, I'll have to try it.

The Qviart website has a big OpenATV logo so maybe they are just Enigma2
boxes which can run OpenATV and maybe other open source Enigma2
software. If that's the case then you're probably supposed to use the
OpenATV website to learn how to work it.
